You know what Big A, I don't know exactly.  Never really thought about it - big, juicy sirloin steaks, lobsters, meatloaf, clams, chili, apple pie, turkey, corn-on-the cob, pumpkin pie.  I would say it's an infusion just like our culture.  One big melting pot.

My view ultimately, is that American cuisine is as complex as today's society. It is a melange of varied tastes and origins. It is Cajun, Tex-Mex and Oriental. It's '50s food all over again. Fries, burgers, shakes and hot dogs co-existing with hot duck pate. It is the blend of foreign and regional recipes with native ingredients, using more natural shapes, colors and foods than ever before.  It is cooking light, watching calories, sodium, cholesterol and preservatives. It is larger, fresher portions, all well prepared. It's a time of clever contradictions where slimming salads and calorie-laden cheesecakes sell equally well. Where specialty food shops open all around us, while supermarkets grow bigger. Where dining out is in, yet home cooking is as strong as ever. American cuisine is the best the world has to offer and, best of all, it's all made in America.  That's my take on it.  :)

And it is excess.  It is having an entire grocery aisle for cake mix.  It is chocolate flavour cool whip.  It is bigger, larger, jumbo size.  It is additives and preservatives.  It is food developed by scientists.  Cereals with sugar as its main ingredient.  It is having no knowledge or interest in farming methods, production methods, or place of origin-as long as the price is right and corporate America gets it profit.  It is a constant bombardment of advertisments.  It is more, more, more.
Just another view.

Of course I did!  It was only one of the wee ones.  It went straight into the bin once we left the supermarket.  That will keep the rats away from that bin.

Ok good. ;) I feel much safer now. Marmite is bad enough - but having an opened can of marmite ina store with a fingerprint in it - I may have died on the spot seeing it.

David did the same thing to me by the way, but he put it on toast and said "no really, it tastes like apple butter" or some line like that - and laughed for DAYS at my reaction.

I'll never forgive him for that. ;)

Willie certainly enjoyed my reaction to Marmite.  I'm a picky eater anyway so he knew I wouldn't agree to eating it on toast...but would only taste a fingertip full.  He got the normal American reaction (gagging and spitting it out) and had a good laugh on me!  He did then bring me some Twiglets telling me that you can't even taste the Marmite...I tasted the Marmite in it immediately even tho I could choke one of them down if I had to! :-/
Life should NOT be a journey to the
grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well
preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand,
wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and
screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

Marmite I can't even get past the smell so no chance of actually tasting it.  The smell of steak and kidney pie also makes me want to gag.  Can't handle pickle on sandwiches and vinegar on chips.  The thought of a deep fried sausage from a chip shop also makes me sick though hubby likes them :-\\\\

But nothing beats a shandy on a hot day but then again I am not much of a beer drinker.  Love beans with my breakfast but not on toast and my friends in the US think I am crazy.

Now I think kebabs are a definitely aquired taste.  The first time I had one I looked at my husband and thought he was insane.

I've been in the UK 18 years and still will not eat baked beans.  That sauce is so sicky.  But i wouldnt eat American baked beans either.

Shandy?  What's the point?  Unless you're driving, so trying to limit your alcohol intake.  If i have to have a shandy, I prefer a lager shandy to a beer/bitter shandy, and never, EVER drink the Bass shandy in a tin!  :-X

Marmite... i dont mind it.  I wouldnt eat it every day, or every week, or even every month... but i get a taste for it occasionally.  The trick is to put extra butter on the toast, then spread the Marmite on in a very thin, transparent layer, and have it melt in with the butter.    God in Govan...  dont EVER eat it from the jar!!  :o
