It's a three year wait if you're married to a UK citizen.  Other than that, I don't know anything because I've only done a year and two months of my three years!   :)

We know its a three year wait but from when? is it from when you have your ILR or from when you are married?

I think I read somewhere else on here that if you came in on a fiance visa or a spouse visa then it's from the day you arrived.

regardless of how you get your ILR, citizenship only becomes a possibility after you've had the ILR for one year.

I thought if you were married the requiremnt was that you had ILR and if you weren't it was that you'd had it for a year ???

sorry, my mistake for speaking on marriage issues, which I never dealt with. The info can be read at:

If you're obtaining citizenship through marriage, you simply have to have ILR at the time of applying, not have had it for 1 year.

I'm lining up to get my British citizenship!  Not until February tho -- but I'm getting prepared!!!!!  It's important to me to get citizenship.  I know MOST people don't care --whether or not I have citizenship but for me -- it will make me FEEL as though I really BELONG.

make sense? :-\\\\

Makes perfect sense to me.  My C-Day (citizenship day) is 9th September 2005 - that's the day I can send off the paperwork.  I can't wait.... ;D

Special tip:  protocol has it that at the ceremony, those who opt for the swearing-in oath get to go before those who opt for the affirmation oath.

Mine is next Wednesday so I'll let you know if that's true. I suspect it might be, since it's listed on the forms first, but that's kind of a minor detail, since it'll be done as a group anyway.

Hi
Although I will only be elligible to apply for citizenship in April 2005, I sent in my application last week with a request to disregard the 12 months of ILR requirement.  According to HO nationality instructions I meet the criteria for discretion to disregard this requirement.  I know they don't have to grant discretion and if they refuse they are not obliged to give reasons, but  I believe I have a strong case.
The worst thing that can happen is that they tell me to make a fresh application in April and I loose some money, right?
