Bonfire Night!
« on: November 01, 2018, 03:29:48 PM »
Halloween is so...yesterday.

I'm looking ahead to Bonfire Night. What are y'all doing? Any plans? Me & the hubs were figuring out our plan for it this morning. Monday is a "school night" so nothing too crazy.

Really was a toss up in my mind - to stay home in jimjams, or to go out and participate with the broader culture. We checked the weather forecast & husband called it.

There's a great one that is quiet, but epic, on Friday night in a wee village by my house, but I have to miss this year because I have to go to an architectural awards dinner.  I am playing at another good village one on Saturday night with the brass band.  I am not sure if I'll go into town for the big the Monday night one.

There's a school near us that does one, charging admission as a fundraiser, but we can usually see at least some of the display from where we live. It might be on the weekend, not sure.

Weather looks dry & actually a bit warmer for Monday, so going into centre to meet husband for a drink after he gets off work. Then we can walk to the nearest city organised bonfire & display, and then walk on for a meal out at a place that does Indian street food type cuisine.

I already made parkin once - for last weekend when we did our Canadian-American-Yorkshire Thanksgiving with friends, but I'll make more parkin this weekend.

Most of my colleagues are going to one of the local RAF base fireworks displays tonight, but sadly I'm working the night shift, so I can't go.

However, as I'll be in Bristol for a few days for the Blizzard Party, I'm currently scheduled to attend two displays: one on Sunday night in Bristol, and one in my hometown on Monday night.

Love parkin! The stickier, the better! I haven't had any in years though!

There is a big celebration at Bitts Park in Carlisle on Saturday night. We are debating going. I think we're gonna kind of play it by ear based on how the weather shapes up. Right now the forecast is calling for rain but it changes so frequently so maybe we'll get lucky. I'm still getting used to going out in the rain and walking about in mud. Wimpy Southern California girl here!  ;)

But I'd really like to go as this will be the first time I'm actually here for bonfire night!  :D

Okay, I've now looked.  Almost all are Saturday night when I will be in Bristol.  So unlikely chance we'll make it to the one on tomorrow night at 6pm.  Boo.

HAHHAHAHAHA. That said, you must not be good at it, since that couple was doing the horizontal mambo on the roof... You claim it's not your carpark, but....   ;)

Haha! That reminds me when my husband was sent on work to Cyprus a few years ago, he and his mate walked past someone's hand-made sign by a driveway there, that read "NO PARKIN". His mate says - that's a bit racist, isn't it? (against Yorkshire folk)

Mmmmm, parkin is so good. Mine is dark & sticky & chewy with oats.

Our cricket club does a great fireworks night every year and we will be there again tonight. They even bring in fairground rides for the kids (and adults that are kids at heart). It is only a 1/4 mile walk from our house so we could see the display without leaving home but we love the atmosphere and the hot dogs, burgers and other junk food that are readily available.

They've cancelled the big fireworks show that was to have been held in Paisley. We had been planning to go, before the Daughter got her job. So it's just as well we changed our plans!  It's still raining here, and a bit breezy. But not as bad as what the weather guy at the MET said it would be. Maybe that was due to come in later?  I did hear some fireworks going off last evening, just after dark. But it's been very quiet today. Which is good, because the poor dog upstairs goes nuts when there's fireworks and it's home alone. (Poor thing!)

Today my wife and I went out for a walk from the house, stopped in town for a coffee and chat with friends, then past the church where our children and my 8 times grandfather were baptized, along a footpath past the 700 year old priory and back up home. At 2:30 I walked down to the football ground with our son to meet up with friends and watch our team play. Then we walked into town and had a meal and a drink at a small Italian cafe where we are friends with the owner and his mother. Then we walked to a local pub for a drink while waiting for my wife to meet us so we could walk around the corner to the cricket club for the annual fireworks display where we also met up with my sister, her husband and her nephew. No rain at all, not even cold (10C).

We LOVE being back home in England.
