I'm so glad you said this... I don't know why, but Secret Santa and I do not get along.  I love Pass the Parcel, but I can't do this one, I'm afraid.  I can't explain why.  Maybe it's the deadline...?

I won't be doing SS either.
I think Pass the Parcel is different in that you can choose what you want... with SS there is always a chance you will receive something you don't want, need or have a use for.  And I just don't have time, energy or enough fake 'thank yous' for that.  ;D

**I PROMISE  I was NOT the person who complained about their SS present in 2012!!!**  ;)

Apart from those from immediate family, that describes pretty much every present I've ever received.. I'm used to it!  ;D

At the last Secret Santa I got a bunch of crappy chocolate, that I didn't like.

If someone had just looked at my desk or asked anyone they could have picked up a cool pen or some stationary or a notebook and I'd be happy. 🙄
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

There is that chance, but with UKY Secret Santa we used to pass on information about the person's likes, dislikes, hobbies, etc. I usually got very nice, thoughtful gifts and tried to give the same. I think there was only one time I thought the person didn't put much effort into it, and I participated probably 4-5 times.

Yeah, I participated 3 times and I got great gifts :).

Everyone gave their likes and dislikes, and sometimes even shared their Amazon wish list, to give you ideas of what to get them :).

Yes, historically, and it would probably be the same this year unless people had strong objections - when you pass on your information, you are able to give a little summary of your likes, dislikes, and any absolutely off-limit things (e.g. if you have a food allergy).

So, for example, I would submit the following:

Real name
Real address
Likes:  Anything to do with drawing, sketching, Hotel Chocolat, and stationary stuff (pens, pencils, etc)
Dislikes:  Cosmetics (don't tend to wear them)
Absolutely off-limits:  Anything containing alcohol

So the person who was assigned me would have something like the above to go on.  It would provide a starting point and hopefully, allow the receiver to get something aligned to his/her interests.

How does it work?

Everyone who participates is assigned another member to buy a gift for.  The fun is that the person receiving the gift won't know who the gift giver is.  We set a deadline for mailing gifts and then set a day to open gifts at the same time.  We then come back to UKY to guess who our Secret Santa (gift giver) was.  :)
