Texan transplant in N. Hampshire
« on: June 04, 2003, 08:32:50 PM »
Hiya everyone! Thought I would join this lovely group here. I needed to spread my wings!

I've been here almost 4 years now, and are planning on making this for the long haul. My British hubby relies on the NHS and a move back to the states in the future doesn't look promising. So, in the meantime, I'm slowly branching out and of course, still searching for those all important American contacts.

I enjoy getting together and hope that I can make some new contacts here as well. Not working at the moment, but only because I quit my other job and with the summer holidays looming (and other things), thought I would take it easy.... but the workforce will be calling my name again soon enough, I'm sure.

Okay, so I ramble.........one more thing you know about me  8)

Hope to hear from ya!

Sherry

Welcome form another rambler.  I hope you find the site useful as well as friendly!

Know quite a few Texans and must say they are a hoot! :)

Since you mentioned NHS...I just have to ask...how do you find it?

Hi Sherry,

Welcome to UKY!  I think you'll like it here!

I lived in the Houston area for 9 years and both of my kids were born there.  I have some great memories of Texas!   [smiley=cowboy.gif]

Where is N. Hampshire?

I'm moving to Kent to join my Brit fiance this month and am counting the days!

Hope you join us a lot.  After living in the UK for 4 years and being living there on and off for a long time, I'll bet you have a wealth of info. to share!  This is also a great place to make some good friends!

Life should NOT be a journey to the
grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well
preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand,
wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and
screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

We are lucky enough to have private insurance as well, but because of Al's diabetes, which is covered by the NHS, most of our care falls under that. As a whole, the NHS is good as long as you remember that it is institutionalized medicine and as such, you need to remain viligiant in your care and followup (I worked for the VA Hospital for years and they are run about the same). When tests/appts. take too long, that's when you become how many Brits envision us.....loud for starters! But as in anything else, the squeaky wheel gets the oil! The most important thing is to have a good rappore with your GP :)

We only use the private insurance for quick specialist care. I had carpel tunnel syndrome and went from seeing the GP to my specialist appt. in less than a week, and then had scheduled the surgery for 2 days later. On NHS, the same procedure would have taken me about a year to get. So we pick and choose our battles.

Medical insurance coverage for a pre-existing illness is what is keeping us from ever moving back to the states. The cost would almost outweigh the move.

Thanks for the welcomes, BTW  :) I live in Fleet, which is about a 45 minute train ride sw of London. Have a couple of American acquaintances in Kent......so when you arrive, give me a shout!

Hi Sherry, glad to have you here among us...  what part of Texas do you hail from...  I lived in Witchita Falls for a few  years after getting out of school...  loved it, hated tornado's, came back to east coast and home.

I am not in england yet...but when I do get there later this fall, it will be way up north.  (errrr, no one ever moves to northern england >:(  :'( )

Again welcome... this is a great place to visit.

Let me see....what part do I hail from?? All over the great state, in a sense. I was born in Amarillo, raised in Big Spring/Midland; spread my wings when I graduated and moved to Corpus Christi.....then El Paso...and the last 12 yrs prior to here were in the DFW area.

I'll always be a born and bred Texan. You'd think I never left if you saw my house. Native American stuff, chili peppers, etc. The stuff actually looks good in this house (Georgian) cause it sure looked 'interesting' when i lived in a Victorian house! Used to have a cow's skull hung in front. Talk about comments! LOL They definitely knew a strange one lurked in their neighborhood...hehe

Too Funny.  One thing I bet is that once you starting whipping up some grub..you made new friends. :)

Grew up in the military so imagine NHS like them a bit, also I have spent many an hour at the VA with dad so know how that goes too.  I can live with that.  Just take a good book, and like you said....make some noise!

Welcome to the site Sherry.  :D  I swear, I'm gonna invite all the Southeners over to the house one night just to horrify my hubby!   [smiley=devilish.gif]  (I grew up in Georgia, but apart from a slight twang I don't really have a Southern accent...until I call home!  hehehehe!  Drives David nuts!)

Don't worry bout being a rambler...I'm the more annoying breed...a babbler!  ;D

Hmmmmm, you could bring him down my way on July 5th. Not only would there be other Southerners, even a few with twangs like me, there will be a few west coast, etc...and of course, the Brits...all enjoying BBQ, Texas style :)

It's a thought.....

(BTW, Wench, saw your bio and tats were mentioned? I'm always curious as to what people have (I've only got 2 myself) 8)

I wish I had tatooes! They are cool. 8)

Would have to be hidden as probably not a good selling point to parent clients.

Hate needles too.  Well I will just live with the ones from the Cracker Jack box. ;)

Wench --did not realize you grew up in GA.  Where from? You might of said and I'm just a doof.

Hi GrnEyesnUK,

Welcome to the board.  I am originally from Texas.  Funny how every country and State of the USA I have always run into a few Texans.  I went to University in Lubbock but grew up in Fredericksburg.  It is a small town near Austin and San Antonio.  But before moving to Kent I lived in New Hampshire.

Glad you like living here.  Sorry about your Husband's condition.  I understand with diligence and care it can be handled.  Wish you all the best.

Well thanks for the welcome. You are already in my good books, cause you are a Red Raider! ;D

Ohh, I love the area around Fredericksburg. Lovely country...always enjoyed driving through there on my way home from Corpus Christi to Big Spring.

1st...Tattoos.  I have three currently (and yeah, I hate needles).  The first was a heart with wings and chain of hearts around my ankle.  After that anything is possible! That one huuuurt!

The second is a shamrock over my right breast. (both of these tattoos were paid for by friends lol)

The third is done, but not.  I have a cross/pentacle thingie on my left arm.  It's beautiful, but I want to have it turned into a half sleeve.  I plan to have a full moon put behind it and then a bunch of stars.  Possibly some kind of colour band behind the stars to bring them out.  It's not gonna be a half sleeve of solid colour, but it will be all tied together.

I'd love to tattoo myself...mebbe one day.

2nd...Well I lived in Georgia for 11 years.  Moved their in the 1st grade and then bounced about the state.  Went from Reidsville to Vidalia to Glennville to Ludowici.  Then moved to Florida.  Then briefly back to Georgia in Hinesville and then Jesup.  I've been to Atlanta a few times, mostly to do concerts.  My high school band was the first to ever play under the golden dome of the capital building.  Neat eh?  :D

And dragging David off to a bbq sounds good in theory...but I can't even get him to go to a bbq in our back yard lol!  :D
