Car recommendations
« on: November 02, 2018, 07:00:34 PM »
So my husband's "beloved" ford focus bit the dust on us tonight. We're shopping for another motor. Decided on a petrol for sure.

What cars do you recommend? I'll be the primary driver so we're shooting for a small SUV (I had a Honda CRV in the states).

Help  :D

How about a Skoda Yeti?  It's a small SUV that has all the parts and engines from VW with some distinctive Skoda styling and thoughtful touches.  Used, they have high resale value because they are pretty popular.

If you don't care what it looks like, consider a Skoda Roomster.  It's got a ton of space in the back but is more like a station wagon than a SUV.  That way you don't have to buy a bunch of 4wd that you will never use and use a bunch of gas driving a big heavy car all over the place.  It's got all the same VW parts and engines as the Yeti but it's ugly AF so can be purchased very cheap.  Get one that has a massive sunroof and a 1.9 liter engine.

Here in the land of tiny things, you might find it easier to drive a smaller car on the tiny roads.  Parking will be easier as well.

Happy car shopping!
I'm on my 2nd Dacia Duster... I prefer my older one to my new one, but they're good cars.

Jimbo is right on the Roomster. Ugly car with a stupid name. I just couldn't...no way.

We looked at a few Dusters but husband wanted a switch to petrol given the issues we've had with diesel and all we could find around here for our budget we're diesel ones. We pick up our new car Monday. Went with a Vauxhall Mokka. Only had 1 owner and made its way here from Glasgow. Very well taken care of with very low miles. Only 14K miles for a 2014. My CR-V had 189k when I sold it for the move lol.

Silver 😁. They had several white ones but I hate having a white car. First one was white and it was a pile of rubbish lol.

I've been trying to do so much research on all the different types of cars over there and reading reviews, etc. so I can get familiar with them. Here in the US, I am very knowledgeable but man, looking at the vehicles over there and they are all new Makes and Models I've never heard of. haha I hadn't looked into the Vauxhall Mokka so I have now. I like them. Added to my list to look at when I get over there. :)

They are very different here lol. There are a few that they have in the states but not many at all. Vauxhall is a good cheaper cost company. Mum in law has a Astra and dad in law has a Dacia Sandero Stepway which is another less expensive company we looked at (Dacia Duster was my first choice). I needed something easy to drive since I've only ever driven an automatic and learning a manual now 😁

The next car we get is going to be a Hyundai. I much prefer them to them to any of the cars I've driven over here. My instructors' cars were a Vauxhall and a ford focus and we own a SEAT Ibiza. But damn, I prefer the Hyundai i20 my instructor had as a temp car while they fixed her Focus. The gear box is lovely and has really smooth changes and it just feels right to me. (I owned a Hyundai Elantra back in the states and loved it.)

The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

I like the look of the Hyundai SUVs but my mom had a bad experience with her' one. Had it 3 weeks and the transmission went kaput. Kind of turned me away from those but she probably just got a bad one. The Vauxhall is smooth. Way better than the focus 😁

I've never driven an SUV, I think they're too big and I hate big cars. Give me a small car any day.

Some SUVs are smaller than others.

The closest to car size is a CUV and I don't like how long they are. SUVs are built on trucks and CUVs are based on cars, but estates/stationwagons.

I want to drive a Fiat 500 over here. My Elantra in the states is a compact car there, but the same size as my Ibiza here, which feels huge compared to the narrow roads and parking spaces.
