Weird US passport validity question for coming back to the UK
« on: November 13, 2018, 02:32:00 PM »
Hey all, it's been awhile!

I can't find the answer to this anywhere...

My boss wants me to go on a quick turn-around trip to Spain at the end of November (like 28-30 Nov). I need to confirm with her whether I can go ASAP.

The issue is that my US passport expires on 14 May 2019 (so 5 months and 2 weeks after I get back). Am I going to have a problem entering back into the UK with less than 6 months validity on my passport? I have a valid BRP card.

Thanks!

No problem coming back to the UK, but do Spain have a rule about the length needed on your passport?

Will the Spanish allow you to work in their country or do you need a work visa for Spain? A UK visa does not allow you to enter/work in another country.

You'll be fine coming back into the UK.

There is no requirement to have 6 months left on your passport anyway, but as you live in the UK, you don't need to worry about passport validity. The only thing that matters is that your passport and visa are still valid when you return to the UK.

The main concern some countries have about making sure there are 6 months left is so that your passport doesn't expire while you are visiting another country on a short-term visitor visa... but the UK's policy is that it just has to be valid for the length of your visit to the UK. However, as you live here, you can just apply for a passport renewal from inside the UK anyway, so it doesn't affect you.

I'm not working there, I'm just going to visit a partner university to see what the campus is like and meet people and stuff as we have a group going there next year.

Spain's entry requirement is 3 months passport validity according to travel.state.gov, so I have that...just not 6 months.
