The telling time thing...
« on: November 15, 2018, 01:06:38 PM »
Ok, I really have to get used to all of this "half six" and "twenty to four" time-telling style. I mean, I do regularly use "a quarter to whatever" or whatever... But I'm generally a very specific time teller. If it's 7:18 then I'm gonna say "it's seven eighteen" and not round it to twenty past seven. I like details and not generalizations. LOL! Nonetheless, I'm in England so I'm doing like the English more and more each day! Trying my best to not stick out like a sore American thumb!  [smiley=laugh3.gif]

Have you all changed the way you tell and speak time?

Yup.  I will say 1:30 but usually say half one.

I do the same! I get confused when my husband says "half past" or "quarter past" like I know what it means but I have to let it process first because I never said the time that way!

I’ve always had weird time telling as my father was Mexican. He would say, “quince para la hora” or “media de la hora”. These translate as, “fifteen to the hour” and “half of the hour”. What?! Just say, 1:45 or 1:30.

All the clocks in my house right now are digital and are set to 24 hour time and the husband and kids will say, “half 16”. Good God, it’s 4 freaking 30!!

This is why I still wear a watch!!

Okay... half 16???? Now, that's really confusing. I'm barely getting up to speed on using the 24-hour clock but if someone says "half 16" to me then I'm probably going to respond with "8"!  Sounds like a maths question!! LOL!

It really is like another language, isn't it?! Like I totally have to stop and translate it in my head to American time. Ha ha!

Yup.  I will say 1:30 but usually say half one.

I'm starting to use "half" more and more now... It just feels so strange.

I've written down appointment times wrong because of that! I made sure to say they should give me the exact time to prevent misinterpretation in the future ;)

No one's going to say 'half 16' to you... if the clock reads 16:30, they will say 'half 4'.  :)

I always repeat back times to make sure I'm understanding correctly. I can imagine myself messing up appointment times as well! LOL!

Ok, phew!!! Because that would just be far too strange an encounter for me!  [smiley=laugh4.gif]

I work on military bases, where we use the 24-hour clock all the time... no one says half 16... that’s just not how you say the time in the 24-hour clock :P.

Here on base, it’s all about Zulu time (GMT/UTC time), so 1630 is ‘Sixteen-Thirty Zulu’ :).

We work in Zulu time regardless of the local time zone, so in summer in the UK all the clocks and computers in our office are set to one hour behind local summer time.

I swear I learn something new daily since I've been living here. I've heard of GMT time, of course, but never heard it referred to as Zulu time. I don't know too much about military speak so that's very interesting. I also had no idea that the bases would keep different time from the rest of the nation.  :D

It took me awhile to get used to it but I’m used to the 24 hour time thing now I think I’d find it weird to see clocks the American way now it’s funny what u get used to. Don’t think I’ll ever get used to centimetres instead of inches though

Back years ago, my husband taught my kids to say “half 16” to mess with me because I’m not great with the 24 clock thing. That was 12 years ago and it stuck with the kids. That’s why they say it.

Correction, then!
No one is going to say 'half sixteen' to you, apart from family members having a laugh!  ;D ;D

Yeah, I just can't envisage a centimeter but I can an inch. It's the same with temperature. If someone tells me it's 15 degrees out, I have to look to the conversion app on my phone. It just doesn't register yet. If you tell me it's 60 degrees outside I know exactly how to dress; 15 degrees I'm gonna get it completely wrong.

Ha ha!! Ok, I got it now! I was so confused at first!

I was lucky that many of my friends were Canadian, so for years I kept my phone app in celcius so I'd know how to compare temps. It made talking about weather much easier with my husband! And it's been so mild here, back home they are getting lots of snow and I can't say I miss it yet. When it's colder without snow I may.
