Lidl is the BEST! I love it! We do our regular shop at sainsbury's because there's a starbucks so we do it on a Sunday and order our coffees while paying at the tils and we pick the coffees up when we walk past but Lidls prices and the food they have is AMAZING.

You need to take them there for the bread alone! :)
I love Lidl and Sainsburys. Lidl for essentials and Sainsburys for the stuff I can't find at Lidl. Especially Fage Greek yogurt. Nothing compares to it!

Our Sainsburys doesn't have Starbucks but our local Tesco has a Costa. It's always a nice treat getting coffee there

Yeah we treat ourselves on Sundays because we make our own coffees the rest of the week.

Pound is going way up... I wonder if the market equates the no-confidence vote with a derailed Brexit.

Out of curiosity, where are you seeing that it's going up? I'm seeing the opposite.

I.E. Dec 6th it was 1:1.28 / Dec 7th, 8th and 9th it was 1:1.27 / Dec 10th it was 1:1.26 / Dec 11th it was 1:1.25 / and today it's showing as 1:1.25 (but you could round it up to 1.26 as it's 1.259)

It's too hard to say if it's truly going back up as it seems to have steadily stepped down little by little so if tomorrow it goes back up to 1.26/1.27 then I would agree that it's definitely going back up but - at the moment - it's only made the first tiny bump up so it's too soon to tell if it'll keep going up or not (not to say I don't want to to continue to get stronger by any means! lol)

I keep a live chart open in a browser tab all the time and watch it.  On the hourly for today, it started going up in the same hour that the news broke that 48 letters were in.   Screengrab attached.  The long green active candle is noon-to-1pm today.

I just transferred $s to £s today. First time I've moved any since October 3rd. (I have 2 US pensions which go into our US bank).

Our other income is from our Roth IRAs and we let their dividends accumulate throughout the year in a money market fund and then move it all over in one lump sum each year, really just to make it easier to report on the HMRC tax return. If the rate stays low then I'll be transferring it to £s early January.

Looks like it's hovering around $1.26.

If I pass my driving test tomorrow I'm buying ariline tickets tomorrow night. With my USA credit cards, since the flights are only 345pounds round trip to LAX. I'll save my "already in the UK" pounds for local expenses. I get a really good exchange rate with Cap One, so I think that's the way to go.

I am SO hoping we can go, just this one last time.  8)

Does your card have foreign transaction fees associated with it? Normally, if you use a foreign card to purchase something in the UK, you will be charged up to 3% of the transaction value on top of any exchange rate conversions.

So, you could find it costs you up to £10 more to pay with your US credit card than with a UK card.

No, no foreign transaction fees, and a good exchange rate (I have a Mastercard and a Visa card with Cap One in the States, so I'll check which is best. They come with some travel perks, too.)

Was gonna say that it seemed to be holding steady so that's not necessarily bad...I guess we'll see if it starts going up or down... Could literally go either way.

So is there a good way to transfer dollars to pounds? I got a little bit of extra money in my US account that I want to move but the rates on TransferWise don't look any better to me.  ::)
UK Spouse Visa (Priority)

FLR(M) Standard

ILR (SET M) Super Priority

I haven't found anything better than Transferwise for smallish amounts and when I had a technical problem with them a while back, I looked everywhere!
The cheapest way of paying them is to use the bank debit (ACH).

Same here.

Yesterday I transferred $8,000 and when it showed me the fees they looked high so I started a transfer with my HSBC account doing a global transfer to my UK HSBC account. I did this in a separate window and got to the last step in both and as usual Transferwise was much cheaper. The pounds that go into my UK account was  £98 higher using Transferwise so I clicked submit and then canceled my HSBC transfer. The money was in my UK account by 9am this morning. I would rather have the extra money and wait overnight instead of a same day transfer. (If I was prepared to pay a little extra and wire the money to Transferwise I could have it same day)
