Travel bag vs. backpack for traveling

HI everyone.. Hope y'all are all ready for Christmas 
I seem to need something to stress over each day  ...So, here is today's stress...
I am taking my laptop, Note 10 and Kindle... and of course Passport and assorted papers as well as a coat.
What do you suggest as far as other than my carry on (which does have a laptop compartment, but using it for my application originals I sent with my Spousal Visa stuff) as my other personal item.. backpack, cross-body travel bag    or my purse... what did y'all do... again, thank you for all your help

I'd just pack whatever is comfortable that you already own.  And used to travelling with.

I always take a roll on cabin bag and a cross body purse for the very most valuable things, money/credit cards/passport etc. The cross body bag is small enough to wear at all times (stretching legs, bathroom visits etc) I feel safe that way.

ahhhh, good Idea on the bag...didn't think of that 

And I also always have another soft bag within the cabin bag that I take out once on the plane. This has my book/knitting/snacks etc and I keep it at my feet for easy access during the flight.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I won't need anything from the stack of papers sent to NY other than my current passport and visa right ...because of a bottle of meds i'm taking , I am taking my marriage certificate due to the script in my maiden name just in case I get questioned. If I won't need anything, I may stick the paperwork in my checked suitcase and stick the laptop in the carry on slot 

I ended up asking for an extra carryon when I moved, important docs + medical stuff + laptops. I have a wheeled underseat bag, and an international carry on so that's usually enough (they slide together when wheeling around the airport)

I would not let paperwork go more than a few feet from me. What happens if your checked suitcase gets lost?

You aren't travelling through Turkey or some other weird country are you?  There are limits on carrying laptops to and from the US and certain countries.

Hopefully I will leave from here in Amarillo but may have to drive to Dallas for a better price, but maybe to thru Denver and Newark on to Manchester ..

True, there's a zipper area under the main carry on space. I can put them there with my jewelry

I stopped traveling with my purse/bag years ago. I only travel with a backpack now. I usually check my big suitcase and have my backpack as my only carry on. I find it easier to be hands-free while traveling and carrying a purse/bag around only begs for me to sit it down somewhere and forget it.
