Moving to London?
« on: February 06, 2019, 02:46:44 PM »
Hello - we are contemplating a move to London for a job opportunity for my husband.

We lived in London several years ago and loved it, and have always considered going back.  Slightly different this time with kids along - ages 12 and 10.   We are excited about the opportunity and a little overwhelmed at trying to find the right location to live, schools, movers etc.  and of course, wondering how much looming Brexit should give us pause.

I'm reading old posts, but I'm sure I'll have lots of questions for all of you with recent experience there - glad this community exists!

Hi,

Given you've lived here before, you have some good knowledge of many things already. Check old posts and drop all the questions you want if things aren't covered or are out of date etc and I'm sure you'll get excellent responses.

Now you have kids, there will be a shift in focus and what you will want given that dynamic. Evaluate and research carefully, compare with the realistic budget levels you'll have and also look at the mess that is Brexit and if you'll be in industries which might be more adversely affected etc. If you do deem it might be more problematic in the future due to that, I'd suggest looking to other countries if possible and/or remaining in the USA. That president chump should be out of office soon and then the USA can hopefully put someone much better in place!

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

Thanks everyone.

Yes, it's a bit uncertain anywhere right now I suppose.   Wish I had a crystal ball to see what the world will look like in another year or two.

London is place that we love and have always had thoughts of going back so there is a very strong pull, but want to make sure we are going in with open eyes.  Trying to remember riding the Northern Line with my nose in someone's armpit at rush hour as well as the when the daffodils seem to fill all the parks overnight every Spring.

My biggest concern in schools - we are leaning towards state schools I think, and that will determine where specifically we live so I have a lots of research to do and 'getting a place' seems to be a challenge all it's own.
