Well....that was easy....
« on: February 10, 2019, 04:03:42 PM »
Just sent my TurboTax in.....wonder if I did something wrong it was so easy. Even though the form still states that there is no problem with filing from overseas.....it still won't take my phone number etc. I just left the last phone number we had in Spokane before we left. I've simplified my taxes to just pension, withdrawal of retirement savings... which will be gone in a little over a year so I won't have that to worry about after next year, and the little bit of interest from our bank here. Still need to send FBAR in....but that is easy enough. Next year I'll have to do FATCA....no idea how long that paperwork is. Nice tax return...bigger than I expected. Thinking about buying a new car.....with doors and trunk big enough to make my back happier.

Does anybody pay for TurboTax with a UK credit card? I think TurboTax states somewhere on the form that you need to pay with a US based credit card.

Great news, thanks for the update. I have had to do FATCA reporting once, and it is very easy, TurboTax leads you through it, just another form for each foreign account that needs reporting, no extra tax or anything.

I had to buy TurboTax again with a US credit card with a US address. I tried with a US credit card and UK address but it wouldn’t have it.

Just doing my FBAR, when it asks for my account information is there a way to put in 2 different sites/money? Last year I just had an account with Lloyds, this year we also put some money in a 1 year fixed with an online bank.

Are both accounts in your name only, or is your wife on the online account?

For accounts you own 'separately', use Part II. If you need more than one  'separate' listing, click on the small, dark rectangle with the '+' sign on the same line as the heading - Part II. A multiple list page will come up.

If the account is 'joint', use Part III. Again, for multiple listing, click on the '+' rectangle.

OAP has the details by the click  :D

In 2017 we each had multiple accounts in our own names as I scattered our house money around so needed multiple sections to report each account plus the part III for the joint checking account. Needed 8938 forms as well. Should be much easier for 2018 and no 8938 forms.

Both our names are on the Lloyds and online bank. I saw the + and - on the sheet......  So after I fill in the Lloyds info on the first sheet I would then click on the + to bring up another sheet to add the other account? The other account I will take my name off in another year or two once I don't need to have my wife on my US taxes. I plan on rolling those 1 year fixed rate accounts over every year (I'll add another one in 6-12 months with another site....going to get 2.1% next year on the current one).

Not for us, a couple of years to go before we cross that barrier, hoping you can tell me how to get TT to put it in the right place on the form by then.  :)

I did an FBAR for myself and my wife this week. I’lll do the Fed return in May and then the LA State return and then our son’s FBAR and his Fed return. Before the end of the year I’ll do my and my wife’s HMRC returns. That is 8 FBARs/tax returns to do per year. Just as well I am retired with time on my hands.

No SS for me until this current tax year. Planning on starting SS this summer. Not sure how TTax deals with it since you don't have to pay US tax on SS.....only here in the UK.....which means this next year (or the year after??)  I need to start doing the UK tax stuff since my SS amount will just tip me over the UK minimum.
