Moving money- purchasing vehicle
« on: February 26, 2019, 08:12:57 PM »
So, hubby and I are trying to sort out the best way to handle this. We will need to purchase a vehicle when we move back. As such we'll need to move funds over (that part isn't too difficult), but does anyone know if there are any legal implications or if dealerships require a set type of payment instrument? (ie bank draft, cash etc). Just trying to pre-plan. :)

Thanks!

If you have a UK bank account then you just use your debit card at the car dealer.

In 2016 we bought a 2nd hand car for £8,500 at a big car dealer in the area and on the day of picking up the car we dropped off our hire car at the Enterprise office and they dropped us at the dealer. For some reason the debit card would not work so the dealer let us drive to the bank and they said there was nothing they could see stopping the debit card from working, So we just drew it all out in cash and drove back to the dealer who accepted it easily enough.

When we bought another car a couple of years later for a much larger sum the debit card worked just fine.

Transferwise is excellent for moving money.

I used a debit card to pay for my car.

Good idea, the dealer will provide account number and sort code and you could use Transferwise to send it directly to his account.

Thanks everyone. Don't have a debit card yet for my HSBC account (it is a savings account) so not sure if they will issue one when we get there. But the information helps.

Oh, I just meant to get it over here.  I'd move the money to my own account first, then pay them from there.  :)

The OP had already stated that getting the money over was no problem so I thought your idea was a good one since he doesn’t seem to have a check book or debit card with his savings account.

I’ve bought several cars and always uses my debit card.

You’ll probably find getting a bank account with a debit card harder than buying a car though.   ;)

This.  I bought a car when I was here as a visitor,  no problem.  Later I came back as a fiancee, and after we got married and I switcged to FLR(M), I still had to jump through hoops to open a UK current account.
9/1/2013 - "fiancée" (marriage) visa issued
4/6/2013 - married (certificate issued same-day)
5/6/2013 - FLR(M)#1 in person -- approved!
8/1/2016 - FLR(M)#2 by post -- approved!
8/5/2018 - ILR in person -- approved!
22/11/2018 - Citizenship (online, with NDRS+JCAP) -- approved!
14/12/2018 - I became a British citizen.  :)

Funny enough the last time we visited  (back in 2012) i was able to open up an HSBC savings account. It's still active. (I'm the US citizen). Hopefully it will be a matter of just adding a current account.
