Momo?

The papers are reporting that "momo has arrived in UK". Is this like that clown thing?
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

Not clown thing but something different. Creepy looking statue created by an artist that somebody has supposedly picked up to use in "Blue Whale" type activity.

Though....while I think the concept of this is incredibly f*cked up and hope that this definitely isn't happening (and can't imagine why somebody would even want to make this up), I do find myself questioning if it IS actually happening or if it's just another internet hoax making its way around....

I've never once seen somebody post to an actual video in question about this, just loads of post of screenshots (which can be faked) to say that this is a thing that's happening now. I've not seen actual news reports of people actually being impacted by this, just news reports to say that there are stories of people being impacted by this (I know the whole Blue Whale thing had actual news stories about specific individuals that were impacted in Russia, but this doesn't seem to be the same).

My guess is that somebody started this hoax and created fake screenshots of texts (but even the texts don't actually appear to show the horrific things that the articles have been claiming are being said) and videos to create a sense of panic that parents are (naturally) spreading like wildfire. Obviously you can't be too careful when your kids are at stake, but I am not actually buying into this one with the evidence presented.
My, how time flies....

Same here. It reminds me of the emails my mom and all her 70-something year old friends would forward to each other when they all got email in 2006.

Yeah it's exactly like that in my mind. I mean, it's sick that somebody would even make something like this up...but the lack of evidence supporting that it's actually happening makes me pretty sceptical. I can't imagine that ALL the videos are being removed IMMEDIATELY before it can be reported on every single time...and, even so, people making the claims about the texts they originally reported on could have easily shared them. There are people that just have no lives and decide they want to make something go viral so they can feel a bit important and something like this is the output, sadly, and it causes fear in parents.

BBC says it's a hoax.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-47393510

Quote from: BBC
Following a flurry of newspaper scare stories, some schools have warned parents about the "momo challenge" - but fact-checkers say it is a hoax.

The character, shown with bulging eyes, supposedly appears on WhatsApp and sets children dangerous "challenges" such as harming themselves.

But charities say there have been no reports of anybody receiving messages or harming themselves as a result.

They warn that media coverage has amplified a false scare story.

A worried mom came to me and few days ago to ask me about this.  A quick Google confirmed that the source was the Daily Mail, reporting it as if it was real.

You guys were right, it takes a sick mind to write that stuff.
