Beef Stock vs. Bovril?
« on: March 15, 2019, 09:04:00 AM »
So, like... I used to get Knorr "Touch of Taste" concentrated beef and chicken stock liquid, but lately, I can't find it anywhere.  Instead, all the shops near me are stocking those little "stock pot" gel-like things.  I'm sad about this because it's single-use plastic/excess packaging, and because I have to use up a whole thing every time I want a bit of stock.  I liked being able to use as much or as little as I needed.

However, a couple of weeks ago, my husband made something and used half of one, and put the remainder of the gel in the 'fridge.  A few days later, when I was preparing a beef joint for the slow-cooker, I used the rest of the tub that my husband had started.  I mixed it with some hot water to make it into regular stock consistency, and then since I didn't need all of it, I drank the leftover.  That night, my husband asked if I'd found and used the rest of his stock pot thing, and I said I did.  And then I gleefully told him how I didn't need all of what he'd left, but I wasn't going to save it any longer, so I drank it.

And that is when, after nearly 7 years in this country, he told me about Bovril.  Why was he holding out on me?  Does he not love me?  First, it was the Cadbury Crunchie (honeycomb readily available any shop!) that I only learned about this year... now it's Bovril!  I bought a jar of it yesterday, and my husband had some tea when he got home from work and suggested I try the Bovril (since I don't like tea).  He prepared a mug for me, and I decided it was a bit thin so added a little more.  Then it was perfect.  And why didn't I know about this before?!

Also, can I use it like the Knorr concentrated liquid stuff?  Because that'd be convenient.

I can't comment on the use of Bovril as I've never had it but I use the stock cubes mixed in hot water plus a dash of Tabasco when I want some broth.

And everytime I hear a Volvo commercial,  I think the guy says Bovril.

My husband’s family all love the stuff so I was introduced to it on my first meeting with them. MIL hardly eats meat but Bovril is as close as she gets to it.
I don’t mind it as my Mexican grandparents used to drink something powered that seems quite similar to it. I found it enjoyable too.
One thing that I hadn’t tasted and loved that I was irked that my husband never told me about for years was Horlicks. I got a mug of it before bed during my hospital stay whilst recovering from childbirth of my second child. It was so comforting and filling. MIL has been sending me a jar every other month for the past 15 years. Plus a huge jar of Marmite for my son. I actually love that stuff too. Again, my grandparents had something very similar to it as well.

My husband had been in the US for a decade before he had his first taste of a corn dog. He’s angry with me because I never told him they were a “taste sensation”. Lol

Mmmmm... we used to have a vending machine at work that dispensed lovely cups of hot Bovril!

Bovril from a vending machine... oh my!  But I do have a whole jar of it and a kettle in the kitchen, so, I'm all set.  Yay!

I don't know how his family feels about it, but my husband doesn't care one way or the other for Bovril.  He doesn't dislike it, but he also doesn't go out of his way to get it.  Which is why I didn't know about it 'til now.

I want to make corn dogs for my husband.  I'm not sure how he'll feel about them, but if he doesn't hate them, then it's another thing *I* can have.  Just need to buy hot dogs and make some batter...

Put it in a bowl with a spoon and call it consommé and it doesn't sound all that bad to me but the thought of drinking it out of a mug just makes me want to gag!  ...  most peculiar!  ;D

I have had jumbo coffee mugs in the past that are more enjoyable vessels for soup than a regular bowl.  Bovril in a mug just makes sense to me.

Oh man.  Now I want to make my favourite beef and veg soup and serve it in a mug.  But my husband doesn't think soup counts as a meal ("Now, if you had some nice crusty bread to go with it, then maybe...!" he says), so I'd be on my own.  Still... one pot of soup is a week's worth of lunches.  Maybe I'll get the ingredients for it on Monday.  Hmm.

I brought my pottery soup mug with me from the states. Its bowl size with a handle and I love it. :)

Yup.  It's so comforting to curl up on the sofa with a blanket and giant mug of soup.  :)

Home made corn dogs in your deep fat fryer sounds pretty good.  Be sure to have plenty of ketchup to hand.

I WANT TO BE AS HAPPY AS THAT GIRL!

I think I need to make corndogs.  I'll see if I can find suitable (not tinned) hot dogs when I have the car on Monday.
