Latest from my big project
« on: March 24, 2019, 05:34:02 PM »
My boy and I have been working on a massive project, it's a Marshmello DJ helmet and it's been really difficult.  We finally got the lights laid out today and it's looking good.  We still have a way to go.  Check this out

For the technically minded, these are strips of WS211B lights that have been cut into strips of 16 pixels and laid out like a panel.  The controller is from Amazon and can deal with a panel, that's why the design works even though the panels are zigzag.  We've got an Arduino that can act as a controller and allow us to code our own panels in C,but we'll mess with that more later.

Here's the power supply that required a bunch of 220 volt wiring

Soldering all of this was a massive PITA, but I'm getting better quickly.

Thanks Tami!

One bad thing happened, I was using a soldering station with a magnifying glass and the sun shined and damn near set my table on fire.

Even worse, last weekend I made fun of my wife for thinking this could happen and I was certainly proved wrong.  She's double angry and there's a big burn on the kitchen Table

That does look delicious but would be impractical at a rave

The other day, Jimbo Jr was trying to convince me that 3 hours of battery life is not enough for his marshmello Helmet.  I can only assume he is planning to attend a Rave that lasts longer

Can guarantee if he tries wearing that for more than 3 hours at a rave he will be very tired of it. I used to wear bracelets, and after dancing for a couple hours they had to go in my bag because they were annoying and hot. (former dj/raver)

I'm sure you're right, he doesn't have any idea what a Rave is.  Come to think of it, neither do I.  I'm more of a indie / punk concert   kind of guy.

The only actual music I've heard from Marshmello is pretty weak.

Speaking of music, the other day my daughter was listening to a cover of Tracey Chapman's Fast Car.  It attempted to be a note for note cover, with added pop synthesiser effects.  The only problem was the girl could not sing and the autotune was obvious. What a mess.

I'm not a marshmello fan. Or deadmau5 who started the LED helmet thing. But they do have some fun technology in them!

And that Tracey Chapman cover sounds vile!

marshmello is a person? I just thought it was the type of helmet or something I'm not into that music scene much (beyond stuff like Daft Punk if you could that) so just assumed it was the "technical name" of the helmet hahah
