Proof that you have not worked before in the UK
« on: March 24, 2019, 07:06:02 PM »
Hi,

My wife (here on a spouse visa) is due to start a new job soon, but as part of the background checks, the company has asked her to provide proof from HMRC that she has not worked before in the UK. She's been here a year now and this is her first job. It seems an odd question, perhaps to find out if she did work and was dismissed. Is this something anyone has heard of before?

TIA,
M

That is weird, they should be able to check that. I was in the process of filling out a self assessment when I was hired, and I'm sure she'll be starting in the new tax year so they should be able to get her rates correct? I had to provide my US references.

I managed to talk to HMRC on twitter (I'm surprised they're replying this time of night) and they said as this is her first job then she would have no employment records with them. She could do a employment history request but that would show nothing either. I guess she needs to go through this process and get the letter anyway. Oh well!
