rice krispie treats
« on: December 22, 2004, 11:24:14 PM »
sitting here craving home made krispie treats... I thought about making some but the cost of marshmallows is unbeleivable... one of the cheapest candies at home costs twice as much here and that without even converting the pence to cents... the thought of spending what amounts to $3.00 for a bag sized amount of marshmallows is crazy!!! but still im tempted... i've seen the packaged ones but they arent as good as home made usually taste stale and mushy... plus i love to mix peanut butter in when i make mine.... ARRGGHH!!!  i want some!!!

Unless you are getting paid in dollars you need to stop thinking in dollars. Honestly, it helps.  Spend the £1.50 on the 2 bags of supercook mini marshmallows (or get the slightly cheaper tesco version if you dont mind the pink and white mix) and make your rice krispie treats. You'll be glad you did.   I made ghost shaped ones for hallowen - they were excellent! I had forgotten how good they were!  We are making christmas tree and wreath ones tomorrow :)

If you really, really don't want to spend the money - and you dont mind some extra work I do have a recipe for homemade marshmallows - kids love them dipped in chocolate and rolled in coconut or chopped nuts.

I'm with wildrose.  If it makes you happy, go and buy those marshmallows, make them and enjoy.   :)

I can vouch that they really make you feel happy!  I made some because sainsburys had sent me yellow and pink ones in my delivery for thanksgiving and i'd wanted white for a salad i make.  i wasn't going to make it with the yellow and pink, so instead of wasting it i made the treats and brought them into work.  People LOVED them, sure they were orange....but SO YUMMY!

They are worth it.  Make them!  And don't fret about the cost....some things here are more expensive and some things here are less.  A lot of times it balances out.

Lidls has a bag for a £ but they are pink and white.

It is much easier to find marshmallows now since they have buckets of tree and snowman shaped ones.  It just means you have coloured rice krispie treats instead of plain ones.

Where can you get these?  RKT are my favorite, especially the ones you make yourself!!!!

Ha. I spent a while slowly going up and down the aisles at the grocery before I found those tiny bags in the baking aisle and then asked someone if they had bigger ones that were white to which his reply was just a blank stare. OOOOKKKKAY, so I picked up the small bags and then went down the Christmas aisle to find a HUGE tub of snowmen and christmas trees (they were green) but they worked and they were only 99p. I took them to a birthday party where everyone loved them, even if I had to explain what they were a million times!

DO IT - make the RKT, they'll make you feel HAPPY.

Yummy!  Marshmallow treats.  Mine never end up as bars, however, b/c I just stand over the pain and eat the mixture.  Found marshmallow cream in Costco today.  Do you have a Costco up there, nvrwas?

They do have them here, but they're pre-packaged, so even worse than the home-made ones.  (I dont like them either).
The other thing i find horrible are those 'cakes' made of chocolate coated corn flakes!     >BOAK<

Flapjacks are nice if they are fresh, bought in a bakery.
But the ones in cellophane, sold in shops are vile.

I totally agree!  Vile little things.  My MIL is forever trying to pawn them off on us and I'm running out of excuses to not take them!

BTW...does anyone have the recipe for RC treats?  After reading all these posts I'm dying for one!

Rice Krispie treats are an excellent remedy for pain, I've found! ;D

Another hater of flapjacks here.  Never bothered with the cornflakes bit.  VERY disappointed with the UK produced Entenmann's products.

I found this on the web:

Kellogg's® Rice Krispies Treats® (Microwave)

Ingredients

3     tablespoons margarine or butter
1     package (10 oz.) regular marshmallows or 4 cups miniature marshmallows
6     cups Kellogg's® Rice Krispies® cereal
(or 6 cups Kellogg's® Cocoa Rice Krispies® cereal)

Directions

1. In a large microwave safe bowl, heat margarine and marshmallows
on HIGH for 3 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Stir until smooth.

2. Add KELLOGG'S RICE KRISPIES cereal. Stir until well coated.

3. Using a buttered spatula or waxed paper, press mixture evenly into
13 x 9 x 2-inch pan coated with cooking spray. Cut into 2-inch squares
when cool. Best if served the same day.

Microwave cooking times may vary.

Note

For best results, use fresh marshmallows.

1 jar (7 oz.) marshmallow creme can be substituted for marshmallows.

Diet, reduced calorie or tub margarine is not recommended.

Store no more than two days in airtight container.
