Does anyone know of a store like
« on: April 16, 2019, 10:35:22 AM »
Pier One imports in the States?

I have a lovely desk made with a black metal frame and topped with a slab of teak. It's very sturdy, and actually  nice looking. It would be perfect for my soon-to-be-acquired aquarium, but it's serving as my computer desk and I perfer it remain that way.  It is one of those that the side supports can be swung in to the center and lay flat against the back, and the top fold down to make it almost a flat-pack for moving.  I would very much like to find something similar here that is under £100.

I got it at Pier One "scratch and dent" outlet in the States for $80 several years ago. Haven't seen anything even remotely like it here. Is there a store like that here? (Especially, is there one in Scotland?) Dr. Google has not helped.

I need to go to Dunelm.  They have a bed pillow there that is perfect for a couple of years.  It's time to refresh our pillows.

There's a  Dunelm in Clydebank,  but I'd be surprised if they had something like Nan is describing.

Yeah, agree. I think what nan is describing will be harder to find (outside of IKEA but I don’t think she’ll like the look of the IKeA ones in comparison). Dunelm was the only place close-ish to pier one I could think of off the top of my head :(

Ikea won't handle the weight, unfortunately. I actually contacted Ikea and told them what I need, and they said they had literally nothing that could hold the weight of an aquarium.  :(

I have found two lovely pieces of retro furniture on Etsy and am just waiting to hear back what they will charge to ship them to us. The seller is saying they are "teak" but I need to know if they are solid teak, or just veneer. If they are solid teak, my problem is solved. Plus they are pretty nice-looking, too.   ;D

There used to be a Pier One type store in Glasgow  -- it was called The Pier, and it stood where the Apple store is now. I wonder if it has other locations or if it folded completely...

It folded completely - there used to be one in Bristol, but it closed down about 10 years ago when the company went into administration at the beginning of the recession.

Having no knowledge of Aquariums, what type of weight are we talking here?

I have settled on and ordered a smaller tank (60 litres, about 15 gallons) that is to be delivered today.  :D  The water will weigh about 8.3 pounds a gallon, so that's about 125 pounds of water, and there's the weight of the tank and the sand, so figure 150 -160 pounds-ish. (Much less than the ones I was originally looking at.)  I had been wanting an 80 litre, but it's both too expensive and too difficult to find something to put it on.

Basically, if the stand will support a person of that weight sitting on it without there being movement - no bending of the surface or wobbly-ness (is that a word?) - it will support the tank. So I am back down into the realm of a sturdy table or chest of drawers (if I have to) again. We saw a couple of likely prospects down at the Salvation Army, and will be going out to some resale shops later this week to check. There are plenty of sturdy coffee tables out there, but we want something that is about the height of a normal table so the tank is visible around the whole room and not blocked by furniture, as it would be on a coffee table.

Too bad about The Pier!

There is an aquarium-related TV show called Tanked

I tuned in expecting North African Panzers....
