Cream Cheese
« on: April 19, 2019, 11:07:45 AM »
Okay,

So I have come to the conclusion either I am a nitwit or there is a difference in the Philadelphia cream cheese here verse the one in the States.

I am trying to make a cherry no-bake cheesecake. Should be simple. Cream Cheese, condensed milk, lemon juice, vanilla.

I have made it in the States46731409348-90385902485 times with no problems.

Here I am having trouble with setting it. It just does not want to set. The only thing I can think of is the cream cheese. Especially since I have had trouble with cream cheese frosting over here before.

Anyone with any idea on this?

Hi not sure about that wouldn’t be surprised if there is. I know that I notice a difference in the taste between philly and store brands here so I always stick to philly as I feel it tastes better

Looks like the fat content may be higher here...

The texture is different so you may need to add some gelatin to get it to set properly.

I went from being a cheesecake master baker in the  US to not even trying anymore. They are just shite.

I don't think I've ever had a decent cheesecake here except for the ones from Costco.  And they must be baked in the US.

Even the "specialty" cheesecake shops make terrible cheesecakes here.

I need to get a Cheesecake Factory cheesecake next time I'm at Costco.

Oh my gosh, I think we might get a Costco membership because I told my husband they had real cheesecake there!  Groupon has a Costco membership deal on right now, so it's only £33 for a year and you get a £10 voucher, two whole chickens, and 48 AA batteries with it (thanks for the heads up, Tami!)... and since he's now a civil servant, we qualify for membership!  Will report back if we get it.  Yay!

Go for it! I pay a lot more for my US membership! I keep hoping I'll qualify for my work in pharmacy but not sure and mine is still good until November.

Does anyone use Costco with shipping only?  My nearest store is 72 miles away, and not somewhere I can get to easily

I qualify for in-store membership, but it looks like online is only £15/year and everyone qualifies?

I'm so ready to buy this membership... there's a Costco in Cardiff, and another just over in Bristol.  And cheeeeeeeesecake!  My husband loves cheesecake, but we both agree that the stuff that the whole of the UK seems to think is cheesecake is simply not.  What I want to know is when/where/how he had real cheesecake since it seems to be so hard to find here (whereas in the 'states, I could get it by the slice at Jack in the Box, of all places!).

I am happy with M&S Vanilla NY cheesecake.  But maybe I've lived here too long?

Does it have that proper cheesecake tang to it?  Everything I've tried here has been overwhelmingly sweet and the texture too smooth.
