Re-entry to UK
« on: May 14, 2019, 02:09:11 PM »
I just came back to UK and had to complete the landing card and was asked about what I was doing in the US during my trip if it was just a visit there.  I can’t recall if I did a landing card last time when we flew into Heathrow and entered with my husband.  This trip I came in with my husband also, showed my BRP with passport but bc I didn’t have landing card they let him go by I had to complete the card and then they questioned me later when I went back in line.  Do you guys know if landing card is always required or does it vary by airport?  I don’t recall them questioning me about my trip but that was 2017 so maybe they did but I just remember it being more pleasant and we were able to enter together but maybe we did the landing card then so didn’t have a problem.

yes, landing card is ALWAYS required for non passport holders (visa or not). It's definitely annoying, but just to confirm, it is required if flying international and going through C&I.

I haven't filled in a landing card in two years, although suspect that is due to traveling with the Euro Other Half. I understood these were being phased out entirely in favor of the e-gates, which aren't much help if you have residence permit stuff to deal with.

There are e-gates but we end up having to go to a desk because I can’t go through the e-Gate due to my passport. They still have desks for scenarios like that but they do mainly filter people with the correct passports through the e-gates

I've always completed a landing card when returning to the UK and go through the UK/EU line when I've travelled with my husband- always very quick and painless. As long as you have it when you approach the agent then you'll able to go through together.

You soon won't need to fill out a landing card. They are being discontinued in the next couple of days.

I didn't have a landing card when we came in from Iceland in 2017, and didn't have one to fill out when we came back to the UK via Dublin this year. Is it something that EU don't have to do? They didn't pass them out on either flight.

Just to update, in addition to scrapping the landing cards, they're also allowing us to go through the e-gates now instead of to a an IO's desk.

I thought I didn't have to do one last time I arrived through LHR...I was grumpy and her question made me grumpier so prob not the nicest to her...it was a teeny airport run by like 5 people so I thought maybe they were being extra careful, she will prob come and egg the house or flag my record for next time lol.

I need to figure out if my UK husband can apply for that Global Entry program in US bc the custom line for USC was sooooo long at Washington DC...but the Global entry line was empty.

If you're travelling with your partner, yes. And, in fairness, due to the new changes in rules, you should be allowed to go through the e-gate with or without your partner (assuming you don't have children under the age of 12 I think it is).
