Have you guys ever watched "The Prisoner"?  I was forced to watch it on PBS by my friend's family when growing up.  Bizarre and boring.  What's wrong with Benny Hill?

I enjoyed The Prisoner, actually.   ;)

https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/172038.aspx   is what I'm passing along to her.
I'm also going to suggest she get a room in or near Manchester on arrival, and get a good night's sleep, as she will have been traveling all day. Then if she wants a car she should book it months in advance. I am going to warn her to not try to bring a car into London, as it'll be useless for her purposes there.

I'm also suggesting she might want to see if Salisbury/Stonehenge/Glastonbury are of interest, and staying there. (Perhaps she can find a tour from one of them over to Wales? If not, I'm sure she could get one from London.)  I'm also going to suggest she increase her time in England from 3 days and cut her time in Scotland down from six. From London she could take a tour to Canterbury for a day. There's also Westminster Cathedral, the British Museum (and several others to choose from), a day to wander around shopping, etc.  It's my understanding York has a nice Christmas market, so she might want to take a day train up to actually get to see the countryside, then stay in York before coming further north. Or she may really want to do the Caledonian Sleeper - if she takes the Highlander it'll take her up to Ft. William. She says she definitely wants to see the Highlands, and has been warned that her ability to do that will depend on the weather.  She's going to base in Edinburgh for a bit, I think, and take some tours out.  https://www.visitscotland.com/holidays-breaks/christmas-winter/   She theoretically will be over here with us for Christmas, and then heads to Ireland.  She has six days planned for Ireland. I'm not sure what she can do in Ireland for six days in winter, other than wait for buses, but.... ;)

She's still planning, so hopefully the info I pass to her will be of help.

My mom LOVES it. I've not even attempted it.

Why is everyone talking about going to Glastonbury?  Is there any reason to go there when there is no festival?

I wondered this, too.  Is it a destination in its own right?

Looks like there are various ruins (like abbey ruins, etc.), but I couldn't find anything (outside the festival) that you couldn't scratch the itch elsewhere with another spot that's almost identical. There are loads of abbey ruins that look the same throughout the UK :)

I assume you are joking.   ;)

But if not, there IS a medieval abbey. OR the ruins thereof. And the Chalice Well. And the Tor....

For New Age types, it's a big deal.

Out of sheer curiosity though, is there something about that specific abbey that makes it more important? Although doing a google, it seems to say that it's believed to be the burial place of King Arthur, so i guess there's that draw? Is there anything that makes those other sites more interesting ruins than other ruins in the country?

Google Ley Lines. And Avalon. ;)  There's a whole thing about Glastonbury being a special site.

Anyway, she's sorted out Wales - she's taking a booked tour out of Manchester that'll run a few days and get her where she wanted to go.  She has also extended her visit by a few days.

Next question:  London. She has specifically asked for a good place to have "tea" in London. By which I think she means the "all the bells and whistles" formal English-like Downton Abby only do it once in your lifetime kinda tea.   ;)

I have vague memories of hearing of a posh hotel that was the place to go, but that was like 20 years ago and I can't remember the place. (I wouldn't send her to Horrids.)  Anything I can tell her that you know of?

Yeah, I know!  So has anyone actually DONE one of those?

(It's waaaay to posh for us - we're more of the "have tea and a scone in the V&A William Morris room" types.)

I'm thinking maybe it was the Savoy Hotel? Guy with a top-hat at the door?

The Ritz.  It’s the most special of the traditional ones.
