Spaghetti squash
« on: June 20, 2019, 12:41:59 AM »
I’m curious if spaghetti squash is available in U.K. supermarkets.   My friends recently served it as a substitute for traditional pasta and I’d like to try it for dinner one evening.

Thanks!

If you look around a lot at markets and in some supermarkets in the autumn, you may find one.  But definitely a bit of a unicorn here.

I know it's not the same but spiralzing zucchini/courgettes would be an alternative.  :)

If you're lucky and it's been a nice and hot summer, you may find them in  farm shops and rarely in a supermarket in the summer.

I try every.single. year to grow them because they're really impossible to find in the Highlands, (too cold)  and I finally managed to get one to fruit (grown in my greenhouse) last summer. It was still green when the frosts came in late Sept. I washed it, dried really well and kept it on my windowsill and turned it every so often to ripen.  On the 27th of March this year, it was finally ripe enough to eat.  It was amazing.

Thanks everyone for your replies.  Phatbeetle - that was a lot of work!  I'm glad you finally had success.

We looked in our Tesco this morning and as expected they didn't have them.  I'll check with a produce vendor at the weekend market in our town to see if they have them or have any idea where to get them.

That's a good idea about a spiralizer.  I have one in the US that I could never get to work.  I bought it at Christmas one year when all the stores had them for about $10.  I'll look for one that's better made.

Thanks again for your responses.  If I end up finding the squash I'll give an update.

We found it several times at the farmer's market in Partick in Glasgow last summer. It wasn't always the best, but sometimes it was quite good!

I ordered a spiralizer and tried it today with courgettes.  Tastes great.  Thanks for the recommendation!

Works with carrots, too. We often have carrot instead of pasta, under our spaghetti sauce. ;D
