Which Accents Do You Like & Dislike?
« on: June 22, 2019, 09:40:39 AM »
I am curious (as a brit) what accents Americans find attractive here in the UK?

Personally, I don't have a favourite but I find the deep Welsh accent horrible. Really Welsh "from the Valleys". They say their U's weird. For example, take the word computer. Instead of com-pyou-ter, they would say com-poo-tah. Not feeling it.

I don't like Cockney accents at all. Just too grating. I also don't care for some of the northern accents. I worked with a woman from Sheffield once, and her accent was just so... flat. Not nice to listen to.

A soft Scottish accent is beautiful. So are most Irish accents.

My husband has a softer Midlands accent. You can hear more of the Midlands in certain words though. Like if he says "Just shut up" you can really tell!

I actually like Welsh accents. It sounds like singing. And I like Yorkshire - it is a comfortable sounding dialect. I have trouble understanding people from Birmingham (think Ozzy Osborne). Upper-crust London doesn't do anything for me - they are too associated in my head with the BBC and the "establishment" so kind of instantly put my hackles up.  ;)

Scottish accents... it's funny, before I moved to Scotland I thought there was just one, or maybe two. Nopepers, there are several. Lowland Scots is pretty. Edinburgh is nice. I like Glaswegian, but I have a hell of a time understanding it.  The sounds out in Argyll and Bute, and the Highlands are lovely. I like the Northern Irish, too.

Irish and the Australian accent both make me shiver.

I’m sure my voice is the absolutely most obnoxious thing most people around me have heard though.   ;D

Because of the EU we have so many wonderful accents now!
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

I actually like the South Asian English ones. Again, like the Welsh, very sing-song and pleasant.
