Moving during application & document return timescale
« on: July 14, 2019, 12:04:42 PM »
Hi.

Does  anyone know if moving house after submitting your application but prior to receiving a decision is an issue?  Also how quickly are your original documents returned? Finally can you have them returned to an alternative address?

Basically to my wife works and lives in New Mexico but her entire family lives several hundred miles away in Texas.. She's considering packing up and moving down to her parents 3 - 4 weeks after submitting her application so she's not in a mad rush to do everything last minute and visit family on the assumption the visa is approved.

Would this move be an issue? Standard mail can be forwarded to her parents. Would the application documents be back by then or is it safer/possible to opt for these to be returned to her parents anyway?

Thanks!

*edit* Sorry this is for initial spouse visa being applied for in the US on priority service.

The only issue would be the delivery of her visa and documents back to her once it has been processed.

They cannot be returned to a different address, so she will need to make sure that on the application form and on her return shipping label, she puts the correspondence address where she will physically be located at the time of the decision, in order for her passport and documents to be delivered back to her... as she may need to sign for them on delivery.

Original documents are usually returned within about 1-3 days of the decision made email, depending on how long it takes them to get the package ready to be mailed, and for it to be picked up by the courier.

So, if she definitely knows she will be moving down to Texas while the visa is being processed, then she can use her parents' address for the return of documents. If she's not sure what she's going to do though, then I would have her use her current New Mexico address and she should stay there until the visa has been processed and returned to her at that address.

Perfect thanks, making the documents returns label out to her parents isn't an issue. You mentioned the delivery of the visa, is this sent separately? If so is this by normal mail and would be forwarded?

No, everything is returned in one package, using the return courier label you send them.
