Have I been eating plastic?
« on: August 28, 2019, 11:01:02 AM »
On holiday in Croatia.  Can’t get enough of the salami.  My husband tells me today I should be peeling the white bits off before eating.  It’s definitely man made.....

So UK Yankee, have I been happily munching on plastic for days?

Photo of the salami slices on the package with casing intact for “my excuse”

Haha is it actually plastic or some type of thick wax?

Glad you are enjoying yourself!

That casing is either plastic, or intestines.   I usually peel it off

I mean, it swallowed just fine.   ;D

If you catch the edge just right, it does peel away nicely.  But not 100% of the time.  Like 50/50.

My thought is if it wasn’t edible, they wouldn’t put it in the picture...  8)

My husband thinks I’m totally eating plastic though.

It’s definitely manmade.

Usually if there's a white coating, it's a natural casing with a safe type of mold that's deliberately cultivated to grow on it to protect it from harmful microorganisms.  For natural casings, people seem split on whether they eat it or not.  I generally peel it off, but not always.  It depends on the texture of the sausage and of the casing.  If it's unpleasant, I peel it.  If it's obviously plastic, I peel it.

See, it’s definitely not a mould.  It’s without a doubt a man made material.  But seems edible?

It’s white with a black pattern.  But again, definitely man made.  Oh well, I haven’t died yet!   ;D

I always thought that salami casing was cellulose , (e.g. wood pulp) rather than plastic itself.   Safe to eat ,but not the most appetising thing either.
