I'll fourth that. Never really cottoned to KK, but DD, oh baaaaaabee.
Married to Graham, we run our own open-source computer training company in beautiful Wiltshire out of our 1814 Georgian Regency home (a former lodging house and once featured in Antiques Roadshow)

I grew up on Winchell's, but they are few and far between (if they even exist anymore?). Local shops back home get my vote. Donuts over here are a pale imitation.

Am I the only one who prefers Dunkin Donuts to K.K?
I lived in North Carolina for awhile and avoided K.K. at all costs. Maybe it was just the K.K. where we lived but to me their donuts were like sugar coated grease balls. Yuck!

I sooooooo agree. I do not understand how they became so popular. To me they are just plain YUCKY- grease saturated and sugar coated lumps. Yuck.   But I do miss real, good donuts. Hmm maybe it's time I dusted off my old recipe. Can you believe I used to get up at 4 or 5 am to fry up hot fresh donuts for my husband before he went to work? Back when I was young and stupid and didn't truly appreciate a good couple extra hours sleep.

How could you not love grease saturated sugar coated lumps?  Isn't that the point? ;)

Ha ha ha Rosie. We have all been there. I would always get up with my husband and make him a hot breakfast before we went to work and then the kids came. Now Im up at 530 or 6am because I HAVE to! :)

When I was in high school I used to date a guy whose uncle owned a Dunkin Donut fanchise. I swear it IS round the clock baking. As soon as my B/F would finish his shift, a new guy would come in and start his. Its a 8 hour process to make all the donuts and muffins. As I remember the pay was very good though :)

Dunkin Donuts has a great selection and seems to always have fresh donuts.  I like Krispy Kremes when they are hot, just out of all that greasy oil.

another lover of DD here.  And Winchell's.  I miss donut houses so much, it comes in waves for me but never quite leaves.  I cannot get over this donut adjustment.  Krispy Kremes aren't that great.  My fave is the pumpkin donut (KK version) but that's just once a year.

Why doesn't a DD open in the UK?  London, even?  Frustrating.  The lines are so long at every KK in the UK I've visited, Harrod's included, why not open a DD?  I've seen Baskin Robbins so that's one of the chain already here.  Of course, the line is very long for Baskin Robbins.  I know DD would do well! :D

Edited to add:  Looks like the franchises are limited to effin Baskin Robbins for the UK.  Dammit!

There is one at Piccadilly Circus in central London, or at least there was a while ago, I am fairly sure it is still there.

Hubby said that at one time there were a few DD stores in London.  As a matter of fact, I remember a gas station in Chiswick having DDs, but that was back in '99.

Hubs also said that 7/11 used to sell them before 7/11 became B2 (Budgens) which was sold on to someone else.

There was a DD in Holborn in London in 1973/4, and one in Edinburgh when we went there about 8 years ago.

I grew up on Winchell's

OMG.. i have not heard the name Winchells in 20 years!!
In the little California town where i grew up, we had a Winchells, and a couple of local privately owned donut shops.
My mom and dad used to go out garage sale-ing early of a Saturday morning, and always came home with the pink cardboard box.... YUM.

We never had a KK or a DD, so i dont know what the fuss is about!

DD is good for the coffee - but as for donuts, I'm not a cake donut person.  Count me as a sugar coated lump of yeasty goodness lover.  I truly believe that if the whole world could eat Krispy Kremes, there would be an outbreak of world peace, and probably diabetes.

Nevertheless, I saw a DD on Fleet Street in london this weekend.  Couldn't bring myself to go in, but it's there, don't remember the exact location but it was between st.pauls cathedral and the blackfriars subway stop.

I herad that Dick Clark owns the KK UK franchise. He tried to get a US one butt he company would not give it to him. So he is said to have brought them to the UK. It was on TV the other day as they were talking about his life as he is ill.
