However --- kids.  I don't have kids, don't want kids, don't like kids, so this may be coming from a biased POV, but I find the kids here are horrible, and if anyone is going to poke fun at you for your weight, it will be these brats.  It sucks, but... they are kids and probably haven't been taught any better.

Care to elaborate, Albatross? Are you talking more about neds or Scottish kids in general?

Casinodog, don't have much advice but your adventure is just beginning! It's not easy, it's often heartbreaking, but so so worth it. I was where you were about 16 years ago and it's an amazing ride feeling at home in two countries.
Plans on hold 'cuz Brexit

Well. i do live in Ned Central, so can only speak of my own experience.
A few of my friends are teachers, though, and have told me some horror stories about the weans in their charge.

Take me with a grain of salt, as my experiences will likely be very different from others.

Britain is the most overweight/obese in Europe , but yet, it's a struggle to find plus sized clothes (especially good quality ones)

Wherever you go in the world, you'll find fat shaming. I can't cushion it, really. You'll have moments, minding your own business, and then you'll be walking along the road and some teenager/early 20s year old men will call from the car calling you a fat cow (This actually hasn't happened in Scotland to me, but has happened in England, but could could happen anywhere)  And you'll get some prat who will think they can call *you* out for being not only American, but a fat one too.  Dicks. Uncalled for.   Luckily ,these moments are few and far between.

Like anywhere in the world, you'll have great doctors who see you for you and you have other ones who will tell you to lose weight for your ear infection  ::)

People also love to tell you how to diet.  Actually Britain loves a diet! Tabloids are full of whatever diet helped whatever celebrity.
It's not always a matter of healthy eating (oh if it were that simple).  Weight loss surgery isn't available much on the NHS, and it's definitely not an easy way out.  But the tabloids will tell you so, and it's another source of fat shaming.    Fat shaming galore in the tabloids.  That you're a drain on the NHS.  And the taxpayers money.  Grrrrrr.    [smiley=bigcry.gif] [smiley=beadyeyes.gif]

Food is always a big conversation at my work. Nearly every conversation revolves around food and eating and they ALWAYS drag me into it, mostly because they think I eat weird or interesting stuff. I'm also usually experimenting with something... homemade yogurt, cheese, fermented foods, etc.

Looking around the lunch table finds a lot of my coworkers overweight with eating disorders yet one of them will always manage to say, "And that kind of food is why all of America is overweight."

Just last week someone at work said about how Americans are fat.  And I said “Yeah, 1/3 of Americans are overweight.  And *just* under 1/3 of Brits are overweight.  Way to win Britain!”

It truly is shocking the number of times I’ve heard people try to “claim” things were British and not American.  There really isn’t competition the other way.  It’s so odd.

I think people are just being sheep and heard that 'Americans are overweight' so they think and state that 'Americans are overweight'.

It's the same when people comment to me 'well, Americans don't get our sense of humour do they?'. My American family members are some of the funniest people i know. The people who say that to me have never been to America and just saying it because they heard it.

Margo, have you seen this article:
https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/sep/15/fragrance-sensitivity-why-perfumed-products-can-cause-profound-health-problems

And associated letter (Re: airlines)
https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/sep/16/positive-about-flying-without-fragrance
Yes, saw both! It depends on the airline but a few are good. Not United in the US though, will never fly with them again. Now trains have started using signature scents as well and pumping it through the carriage. :( Until the UK recognises fragrance as an accessibility issue my life here is going to continue being much more difficult than it needs to be.

OMG, really? WTF? Why would they pump through perfumes?  I don't have MCS, but I definitely have issues with some perfumes and scents and I just don't see the f'n point of that.

Someone did research that shows scent can relax people or create memories, and now it's a fad that ignores all that other research that shows it negatively affects at least 30% of the population. It's nuts. There's also a misconception that if the scent is based on essential oils it's fine, but I know a ton of people allergic to limonene that's found in most essential oils. *sigh*

As I type, the sweater that I brought home from the charity shop is on the third go-round in the washing machine to try to get the scent they spray on the clothes out of it. It's a lovely sweater, but it does reek.  I ~hate~ it when they do that, and they do it a lot at the charity shops. Takes for-ev'-er to get the stink out of the clothing! My sinuses are already annoyed by all the dust I've stirred up while cleaning house today, and now they are being stabbed-at by some freakish artificial floral scent emanating from the sweater.  >:(

Fortunately, the cost of the sweater and the fact that it's in mint condition justifies the cost and hassle of washing it so much.
