Little embarrassments and oopses.
« on: October 03, 2019, 02:25:13 PM »
Let this be a thread where we admit our little blunders.

I'll start with this one that I keep doing: I've lived in the UK for seven years now.  Also, I was a military brat growing up.  You'd think the 24-hour clock would be old hat for me.  But nooooooo.  I mean, for the most part, it is... I can easily "translate" it in my head most of the time.  However, many afternoons around 1:30pm, I think "oh, it's 3:30pm... I need to do the things soon."   And at 2pm, I'm thinking, "ack! Nearly the end of the day!"  But, in fact, I've still got two hours to go.

Whyyyyyy?  Why do I still see 14:26 on the clock and panic because I haven't even started the washing up yet?  I should know better by now.

But the good news is that you have more time in your day than you think you have!  ;D

I took two of the cats to the vet this morning for their annual check up and told the receptionist I was here to see.. my dentist's name... oops!  ;D

I'm sorry, whom did you say you're here to see?

Yay!  Bonus hours of being lazy before I have to do the chores!  Wheee!

Tomorrow you'll check in at the dentist with your vet's name.  :)

One of my biggest and most memorable "oops" moment happened when I first moved here.  I was out buying new clothes and asked one of the store employees where the pants were as I needed professional-looking new black ones for a job I was starting in a few weeks.  She looked at me, grinned cheekily, and said, "What kind of job is THAT?"  I totally didn't get it until DH explained it to me.  I then turned a wonderful shade of crimson.

It almost ranks up there with when I handed a cashier a £20 note when something was £0.99 because I was still unfamiliar with all the different coins.  And it was embarrassing because when opened my wallet, I actually had a significant amount of pound coins that were very plainly visible.  But no, have a £20 note because the coins were too frightening at the time, especially with the queue behind me!  ;) :D

Oh, dear!  You must've been mortified when your husband explained it!  (And maybe a bit annoyed at the employee who must have known what you meant!)

I am so glad that paying with a card is so commonplace now.  I still struggle with the coins.  On the rare occasions that I have to deal with coins (other than 'renting' my shopping trolley... that pound coin just stays in a pocket of my bag), my husband laughs at me studying them to see what the denominations are.

We have an office supply ordering sheet where I work. If you use the last of something, you put it on the list. I was the last to use the roll of paper towels in the kitchen (aka: kitchen roll, as I later found it is called).

The office manager sees that I requested paper towels and made a really big deal about how “the company does not supply female employees with paper towels” and that I am to provide my own. I was confused because surely men use them, too?

Anyway, another colleague realises what I meant and quietly tells the office manager I had meant “kitchen roll.” The office manager then decided to let me know in front of everyone that “in this country we call it ‘kitchen roll’.”

Turns out she had thought I was asking the company to buy me some pads and just felt like embarrassing me.

My God!  If it makes you feel better, she must be 10000 times as embarrassed as you if she has any shame.

Last Christmas I cut the homemade traditional Christmas cake that was baked and fed by my managers mother months ahead of time that was intended for the Macmillan fundraiser auction... thinking it was a dodgy cake that was going off because the frosting was so hard.

That story still makes me giggle when I think of it! Christmas cake is so awful, but I actually don't mind Christmas pudding. :) (Foods of Athenry do a very nice nut free gluten free pudding. Goes great with brandy butter.)
