Murder Myster Dinner Party??
« on: January 02, 2005, 08:36:55 PM »
Anyone ever hosted or attended one of these? The DH and I are intrigued but haven't even been to one before. Apparently now you can download everything right off the net after paying.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I've seen the boxed ones and I attended one in a big house in Western Maryland once that a friend ran ages ago.  Also went to one at his house.
They can be good fun but you have to be inquisitive, a bit outgoing and willing to do what it takes to solve them.  You also need to put up with some boredom if the person running it isn't particularly sharp and engaging everyone all the time.

My friend started his own company and has done a number of them:  http://www.mreparties.com/.  I don't know if he's done any in the past year or two due to other commitments, though.
His is very interactive, he contacts everyone ahead of time, has each person come up with ideas for their character and then integrates each character in with everyone else and into the plot.

I don't think the boxed ones tend to go that far, instead there is a mystery to be solved and everyone shows up independently and works to solve the mystery.

Hope this helps,
Matt

I've always wanted to do one, but am a bit too reticent to host one myself. But I'd go to one! Graham and I did one on a train once, but it didn't really engage us because the exposure was really just a haf-dozen or so people at a time, and with the players walking up and down the aisles, there was a LOT of 'down' time.
Married to Graham, we run our own open-source computer training company in beautiful Wiltshire out of our 1814 Georgian Regency home (a former lodging house and once featured in Antiques Roadshow)

I went to one years ago, with a theatre group I belonged to. The person hosting it, sent us each an invitation, that told us who our charater was, and a background on them. We all dressed in character, and it was a blast,,lol.  I can't remember much about it, except the wine was flowing quite freely,,LOL

My DH and I attend one in a very nice hotel.  The actors were great and it was very enjoyable.
