Reciprocal EU Healthcare on Spouse Visa
« on: December 09, 2019, 08:57:47 AM »
Hi all, it's been a while.  We've been getting used to married life - so far, so good.  Tre has a job until the New Year, when we're off to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam for 3.5 weeks :)

We're actually going for a short break to Paris tonight, and I was wondering if anyone knows if the reciprocal healthcare arrangements that UK citizens enjoy with the EU extends to those on a spouse visa (since they've paid the NHS surcharge)?

Hope everyone is well :)

Always get travel insurance.  The reciprocal agreement (which you need to apply for and get a card) only allows you the same treatment a French person would get - which isn't great.  High excess fees, etc.  Travel insurance is sooo cheap and you can usually get an annual policy that will cover EVERYTHING imaginable.

Thanks, do we purchase health insurance from a UK provider for him now?

Or because his passport is US, should his travel insurance be US-based?

How long has he been in the country? Travel insurance is based on residency and other factors, but once you've been in the country six months there are a lot more options. Depending on the plan it can even cover you worldwide for the year. I have pre existing conditions that need cover so it's a bit more expensive but still very reasonable if needed!

Thanks
I'm struggling to find a travel insurance provider that doesn't stipulate that he needs to have been here for 6 months - anyone got any recommendations?

You can usually add travel insurance onto your package on your current account at your bank.  I'd give that a try.  Or use a search site like compare the market.

Try World Nomads. I've seen them recommended for back packers and people with no fixed abode!

I believe this is the company I used, but there likely are cheaper plans. https://www.insurancewith.com/

STA Travel offer travel insurance to people who have only been in the UK for 3 months.
