Milk Delivery - how to go about setting up
« on: January 03, 2005, 11:28:42 PM »
Hi Ya'll:
Just a question for you.  I've been wanting to set up private milk delivery (like from a dairy farm).  I've heard the truck come around late at night and have seen bottles on selected neighbors front steps.  Has anybody here set up milk deliveries?  And if so, how did you go about it?/where did you get info on it?

We get milk delivered.  I'm in Kent.  It's mainly b/c of my FIL.  Check your local Thomson pages or the phonebook.  I just looked and they have 3 different deliveries available for my area.
FIL leaves the empties out at night and when I used to leave BEFORE the cows were up -- I used to SEE the milkman delivering (around 4:45-5am)

Most companies offer other goods for delivery too -- like -- we get bottled water at the same time as the milk.  Almost like the Schwan man.

I'm amazed in the summer months that NEVER once did we receive milk that had gone off in the warm weather!

Good luck!

Sorry, a bit off topic here.
For those of you that have milk delivered can you please tell me about the quality. My neighbor has milk delivered and recently we house sat for her and seems she forgot to stop her delivery. The milk that was delivered was in plastic jugs as you would get in the store but it seemed all separated and from what she tells me it doesnt last as long as store bought milk.
With four boys and a milk drinking husband we go through 3, 6 pint jugs a week I have considered milk delivery.
Also what about the cost? Is it about the same as store bought milk? What about the Summertime. Any risk of milk souring if you dont get it immediately in the fridge? My neighbor's milk gets delivered at 5:15am like clockwork.

We have had milk delivered for over 30 years and I can't remember ever having a problem with it. However, I don't buy milk from the supermarket often enough to be able to compare how long it lasts. Ours comes in glass bottles, not plastic - I don't know whether that makes a difference. It does cost a bit more, but I'm willing to pay that for the convenience. Our milkman comes about 4.00 in the morning!

Ours comes in glass pint bottles too, but if you get large amounts delivered each day, they may give you the 4 or 6 pint plastic jugs.  As long as you don't leave the milk out all day in the summer, I doubt it would go off.

I have a pint of semi-skimmed delivered for each day.  We tried the whole milk once baby came off infant formula, but I wasn't very pleased with it.  It's probably more to do with my phobias than with the milk quality.  Silver-top -- as whole milk is called -- has milk fat that floats to the top.  To me it looks like curdled and that gives me the heebie-jeebies.  So we get baby's milk from the store which tends to have less floating milk fat.

We only have semi-skimmed now, but when I was a child silver top was the only choice. My mother used to pour off the cream at the top for us to have with puddings. All primary school children were given a small bottle of milk every day at break which you had to drink, even if had been kept by the radiator for a few hours and was warm  - yuck ???

Incidentally our milkman is coming at 1.30 am these days; he told my husband that it's warmer at that time than at 4 or 5.

We're getting milk delivered too. Just one of those things that is so great about this country. Besides, I think it's very important to support local businesses. It's just that I can't get quantities right yet. This morning I returned 32 empty bottles. That's the amount of dumped milk to make room for eight more fresh bottles delivered this morning.

I used to get milk delivered but just couldn't organize myself to keep it going.  I either had to run out to the shop anyway because I hadn't ordered enough, or I had fifteen million too many.  And then there's the whole washing and setting out the empties thing.  Maybe once my milk guzzling kids are older and I only need milk for coffee I'll give it another go.
Our funniest milk story though is the time we ran out when Lizzy was a screaming baby and James had to run outside and stop the milkman at about 4AM.   :D

I would love to get it going again as they used to have it here... I just worry about the students and what they might do with the bottles... :P
