All throughout this, I keep imagining that there are these greatly qualified professionals at the WHO, with PhDs and MDs, with Board Certifications and Royal College Fellowships, who have completed years and years of post-degree specialist training.  When their parents ring them up to ask them all about their valiant cutting-edge scientific contributions to fighting this novel disease, they then answer with, "I'm just constantly having to remind people to wash their flippin' hands."   ;D

Where is the rolling on the floor laughing emoji when you need it  :D

We had noticed over the years cruising that the bottles of cleaning gel at the dining rooms had been supplemented by  sinks with soap and water. Simple is best.

The number of people arguing on local boards about not covering coughs/sneezes, washing hands, really basic hygiene is so horrifying. People genuinely think its a waste of time. And those people are the ones that will spread it. :(

I agree, it’s like the herd immunity failing when enough people don’t get vaccinated, when enough people don’t do proper hygiene the virus is spread

I'll just leave this link here.

I don’t click “naked links”, they might contain viruses  :)

I clicked it.  It warns against using elderberry syrup, which is known for boosting immunity, if you're sick with Covid-19 because it can increase your chance of having the "cytokine storm" complication, where your immune system basically goes into overdrive and you very quickly deteriorate.

I'm taking daily zinc supplement (10mg) because it is shown to inhibit viral replication, and my plan is to use fake-Benadryl if I get sick.  That, and symptom mitigation, is about the best I can hope for.  Plus, boosting the oxygen to keep my sats up.

I picked up some quercetin too, they're testing it in China right now. It's an herb but it was effective for other very dangerous viruses. I don't know the dose (would need medical advice for that), but given it helps with mast cell stabilisation I'm guessing it helps prevent that cytokine overactivity. Having it on hand can't hurt!

Everyone is an expert now, including the “it’s just the flu” people.

I’m finding it really interesting that it is political in the states, whether you even believe it exists or not depends on if you are a trump supporter.  I’d be really happy to be proven wrong and for Trump to be right about this one.

Ok, so what is this stuff?

I had an episode several years ago in response to bird dander - my immune system went absolutely nuts and attacked my lungs. I have a tendency to have that happen to any viral infection, but that one almost killed me. (My lungs still look like they are full of ground glass on a CAT scan.) If there's something out there that can tamp down the immune system response, other than large doses of steroids for a long time, I probably should get some!

Hmmm. Apparently Tesco is rationing some staples. I went to do my online shop and all the long-life milk (whole milk) is gone. Lots of OJ available (rich in vitamin "C"), but the whole milk is gone.   ::)

It's just an herb, if you look for quercetin on amazon or even Holland and Barrett you'll probably find some.

I am coming down with something, I have a mild fever and cold symptoms, and I am really hoping it's just a cold. In the last week I've had to go to the hospital, GP twice, work in an office with many international travelers, and picked up glasses. Next week is the fracture clinic. Based on the PHE stats there are only 2 cases in Bracknell Forest right now, but my GP anticipated that increasing quickly. :( Hope its OK for me to work remotely a few more days!

In a televised meeting with the pharma folks Trump asked if a good standard flu vaccine won’t work. He was told “no”, but you could see that he didn’t really believe them.

When the leader of the free world thinks it’s flu it’s not surprising that the theory has strong internet backing.

The best comment I’ve heard is “all the people on Facebook who were political experts are now epidemiologists”.

After the COBRA meeting today I was really expecting them to move from the containment phase to the delay phase of their plans but they stopped short, which means big events and sport continue as normal.

I have a sore throat and cough at present, stuck at home instead of being in Edinburgh with my wife who is looking after her sister after she had open heart surgery 10 days ago. (Aortic valve and several inches of aorta replaced). My wife doesn’t drive these days so they could really do with a car and driver on hand.

I did give the NHS.111 online questionnaire a go this morning and the conclusion was to go see a GP  but that is the last thing I want to do at present, unless I still have it after 2 weeks. Normal temperature,  no flu or cold symptoms but the last thing my wife’s sister needs right now is a hacking cough just after she has had her chest split open. It’s lucky that I developed it the day we drove up (March 1st) and returning immediately has meant that my wife did not catch it.

It's also the beginning of allergy season (many people reporting it hitting them earlier than usual), so maybe also take some antihistamines and see if it improves? I hope that your wife's sister recovers well. I think what I'm dealing with is a combo of side effects from opioid pain meds and allergies, but I'm glad to be wfh a few more days from the foot injury.
