Establishing Residence: Sample Letters
« on: February 10, 2020, 10:40:40 AM »
Hi Everyone,

So our living situation is that we live with our in-laws - their house is paid off so we cover the bills and Council Tax. The Council Tax is under my husband's name.

Would we still need a letter from them + their land registry? And if so, can anyone provide me an example of theirs, pretty please?

Yes, you need their Land Registry and a letter from them giving you permission to continue living in their home. These two documents are more important than the council tax, as council tax does not prove ownership of the property.

The letter should state:
- the address of the property
- that they own it outright and are including their Land Registry document
- that you have been living with them since X date and that you have their permission to continue living there
- that you pay the bills and council tax
- the property details (number of bedrooms and living rooms) and total number of adults and children living in the property, to show it is not overcrowded.
