WEP and UK Pensions??
« on: February 18, 2020, 09:07:27 PM »
So my wife and I have been working in the UK for a couple of years and are in our 50s. We both worked in the US for 20 to 25 years of "Substantial Social Security" earnings. Since we are living in the UK and are retiring in the UK what is the ramifications for the UK pensions and our Social Security? My wife is paying into an "Ee" and "Er" pension and I am paying into a private employer pension and maybe the same "E" ones as her also? Are those mandatory government ones? Does anyone know any place where this is explained in plain English?

Can we get both Social Security and a UK pension?

Just lost.... help.... ??? ???

Private pensions and the UK state pension (OAP) will reduce your SS through the WEP rules.  We will be facing this ourselves soon over the next few years.

Here is a link from the SSA:

https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/wep.html

It's complex, but in essence WEP applies to pensions through work. NI voluntary, (OAP Class 2/3) and personal pensions don't count

Thanks guys....

I guess the next question is, since good old Uncle Sam is gonna take that money away, how can I figure out how much my pension will be worth on this side of the pond? All things being equal and assuming I/we stay at our jobs and work until we retire which will be in about 10 years or so...

Is there a government website that calculates it all???

You can get an exact estimate on the government website when you register. Below  is gov.uk website with some good
Info and a pension calculator that doesn’t need you to register. However, I would definitely sign up so you can check your record and make any corrections if needed.
