I'm not entirely out of the woods if it was Covid-19 causing my asthma flare, but if it was just a cold + allergies, I feel like a new person. I forgot how exhausting struggling to breathe is because I always managed to get treatment pretty quickly in the past, but they don't do breathing treatments at GP offices here. Really glad my GP was on top of the phone call with advice.

Another high risk friend has been diagnosed with probable infection and is fighting to stay out of the hospital. Someone was an aide at her son's school and later tested positive for the virus after travelling to an affected area, infected her sons who brought it home to her. This is just going to get worse because they did not close schools soon enough. She tried taking her kids out earlier because of her risks, and they told her they'd fine her! She's low income so she couldn't swallow that fine. Now if it turns into fibrosis she could lose her life because of an evil school head master.

They were trying to avoid closing schools because of the impact on the economy and to keep the NHS running as a part of that. No matter what they did, it was going to be viewed as “wrong”.

They should have had better guidance and understanding for at risk parents though. Even when her son started getting ill, because he didn't have a fever they demanded she send him in. That's just one school, but the same happened in another area of the country to another set of friends. I haven't heard how his wife is managing, but she was also very at risk. So yeah, I understand not wanting to impact the economy, but they could have been much more willing to protect the people who needed it by making much clearer guidance.

I think if I were those parents, and worried about my health, I wouldn’t have sent the kids - fine be damned. (They don’t fine like that up here, so kids have been off school all week already)

Exactly that.  They can’t fine you if you home school.  And no court would allow fines at this time anyways.

Hugs for your friend Margo.

Agreed, absolutely. At some point we all have to take responsibility for ourselves.  The government is doing as good of a job as they possibly can but with so many moving parts, it's impossible for them to cover every single scenario. I've been impressed so far with how proactive they have been, while still following the scientific recommendations.

Like I said, they couldn't afford the fines which were threatened. Obviously they would have continued any lessons at home, but yeah... They are just scraping by and weren't in a position to be fined. It really wasn't an OK situation. You're also making assumptions that the parents are neurotypical, and they aren't, so if someone says "you must do this" they follow rules. They hadn't been able to get the medical professionals to override it because of the current government guidance at the time.

Woah, Margo, I’m really sorry for your friend, but I’m not making any assumptions anyone,  but just saying what I would do. Obviously everyone has to make their own way in life. I personally would have said hell with the fines, not paid them, ever, because it wouldn’t have stood up in court.

I don’t think in this situation anyone has any answers and it’s hard and stressful. There are no right answers.

I am also American so I still like my independence streak..........

I really really hope they don’t get this awful  virus.

Like others here, worried about job situations. My husband works in architecture and everything has ground to a halt. Not sure he’s gonna have a job here shortly.  BIL is a professional wedding photographer......

Called my parents yesterday and my Dad is 95% sure  he’s not gonna have a job within the next week.
One of my sisters was a part time para in a school on an hourly rate  and isn’t getting paid now and she is a single Mom with 5 kids. This is hard and tough and scary. At least in Massachusetts there is Mass Health, so if things go bad, they will have a bit of health support.
I think the US is screwed with the orange buffoon in charge.

I am as well. My entire family and group of friends is there. I also worry for us.

The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

I just worry for thr world right now in general. Strangers and friends/family alike. I just feel like there is no "right" answer or way to fix this all quickly and easily and that's scary. The idea we may not be able to make a choice to help EVERYBODY because people have different needs it scary.

I just saw on tv that a loss of taste and smell can be a sign of ostensibly otherwise asymptomatic Covid-19 infection.. just something else to look out for.
