After stupidly ordering a few plastic sheets and elastic straps, I did some more research and found that it is actually possible to have face masks that are worse than nothing and one printed in my son's dirty room would qualify. Doctor's wouldn't be interested and it's not nice to sell them or even give them away.
It's the thought that counts (hope you didn't spend too much money as you were just trying to do a good thing)

You and your family could probably wear them though?

In vancouver my friend is helping make face shields for ICU staff, but that is different than a face mask. And the hospitals asked for help and provided the designs!

Jimbo, if you were planning to print the frame that holds plastic sheet for a face shield, I don't see why that couldn't be sterilized and used.  I think you should carry on.  The shield would protect the patient and the health worker from large droplets.  Every little bit helps.

Sorry, I actually meant face shields.  There are several projects going , but none that are interested in anything that comes out of my son's filthy room.  At the very least, you would have to wear gloves and a surgical mask when handling the parts and we don't have either.

The only plastic that can print on my kid's machine is PLA which is not food safe and can't be heated enough to allow sterilisation.   It would be OK to use as disposable if they could be printed in a clean enough environment.  I think there's a pretty high bar to making medical equipment and I think realistically I'm just not there.

That's a thought, let's hope it doesn't come to that.

We got back from Scotland on Sunday after 3 weeks looking after my wife’s sister. Amazing really how quiet everywhere is.

We were told that all you needed to go shopping were gloves and a face mask. They lied, everyone else was wearing clothes.*

NY Gov. Cuomo has made his daily statement. They are in deep trouble.

They asked for 30,000 ventilators. FEMA sent 400.

Trump will not invoke the Defense Production/Procurement Act, which would have the force of the Federal Government to order manufacturers to make a set number of units of needed equipment. There is nothing left on the market to buy.

HHS holds 20,000 ventilators in reserve. They refuse to release them to NY.

The NY infection curve has accelerated. They are doubling every three days now. NY is now projecting to crest in about 14 days

Trump now has blood on his hands. How much blood is left to be determined. But he is a murderer as sure as if he'd shot those people himself. Walked down the hospital hallways and shot them where they lay. Murderer!

I cannot stop crying for them. Oh my gods, the stupidity.

margo ,glad your friends aren't in hospital, long may it continue, and I hope they feel better soon!!!

Man, I know the NHS isn't perfect and has  been woefully underfunded ,  but they sure are trying now. and I know this is a crap Brexit government, but I just can't help that feel that I'm glad I'm in the UK. My heart is absolutely broken for the US, where Trump wants to people to go back to work and break social distancing already, when they're just standing on the tip of the iceberg.
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

So much, this!  I look at the US right now and I see it as a train wreck.  I know people on that train, and some of them are going to die, and I can't help them.  I'm already mourning them and trying to come to terms with what I'm about to watch from over here.  It's giving me a sick feeling in my stomach.

Totally agree.  I dislike Trump and his supporters more than words can convey but I certainly don't wish this on them or anyone else in the US.  I would happily be wrong and vote for Trump in the next election if this could all be over by Easter and people could stay at work and just wash their hands more and it would be no big deal.
