UP Visa application
« on: January 05, 2005, 01:41:36 PM »
Hello All,

I'm starting to think these posts throw up more questions than answers, but I need some help so here goes:

My girlfriend is applying for the UP visa. She's currently in the US, I'm recently resettled in the UK (having moved back from the states when my J1 visa expired). We're putting all our documentation together and one of the things left for me to do is write my own letter, stating that I'm keen for her to come.

I'd like some advice on this. How personal should the letter be? Is there a particular tone I should aim for? Obviously I'll include all the facts that show we've been together for the requisite amount of time, but is it a good idea to include the mushy and sentimental stuff too? I know this would make it a bit more personal/human.

Also, is it a good idea to get some personal tetimonies from family members, confirming our relationship and saying that they consider my girlfriend a member of the family?

I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks and happy new year.

Matt

Hi there!

I hope I may be able to help a little. I just went today for my up visa and got it :):)

My boyfriend wrote a VERY short note of intent saying who he was and that he was having me join him in the UK to live and that he didn't want to be apart from me. It was that short and sweet and there was no problem.

We also brought two notes from two different friends to attest that we are a genuine couple. They are a help although I don't think the woman helping me cared. I brought every piece of anything I ever had to link us, including medicine bottles with my name on them when I was sick in the UK.

For the record, we have almost no savings of our own, had a co-sponsor and also had very little evidence from our first year other than passport stamps and this woman just KNEW we were telling the truth. Just bring more of everything and have it organised and ready. Look them in the eye and be pleasant and if you are a truthful person, you'll get your visa.

Ah, Congratulations! And thanks for taking the trouble to give me your advice. It's heartening to hear people pull it off. This whole thing is a bit stressful. Out of interest, which consular did you apply to? We'll be using LA and applying via mail I think.

We applied at the NYC consulate in person as it was almost up the street for us to do it that way. I just spoke to another person via e-mail who just applied yesterday or the day before at the LA consulate and he got the visa as well and said it was easier than he thought so again, just be calm and bring everything you have and you'll be fine.
