Hello ya'll
« on: January 05, 2005, 01:43:24 PM »
HI there - As you can read I am from the southern states & miss being home! I have been in the UK for 3 1/2 years now & still have not 'settled in'.

I have debated on/off over the years whether to join one of these sites, but I thought I would give the brits a go. Nothing against the brits ( as I am married to one), but the word reserved does often come to mind. Funny thing is I have never comtemplated that word to describe someone until I moved here.

Looking forward to having people to chat with & may be get to know. Also, trying to figure out is it me & my culture or it's just a british thing!

Hi Lori and welcome.  I can't say if it's you or them.  From what I see on here a lot depends on where you live and who you have happened to meet along the way as well as personal traits and experiences. Some people love it here, some are in the middle and others can't wait to get out.

I'm lucky and have settled in quite easily in just six months aside from missing my mom and dad and the occasional "have a nice day" at the checkout.   ;D

I hope you enjoy the site!

Some of it might be the southern thing...I worked at a southern boarding school (the school wasn't southern but the clientel were) and the kids who ended up going to northern college reported back that it was tough to deal with...and when I moved up to Boston I definitely felt the differences in how people were...I would think that northerners are much more reserved than those in the south...until you actually got to know them & then they were the most genuine people I had ever met!  So...perhaps you are seeing some of this yourself...I do miss the niceties of the south sometimes!

Lori,
Welcome!  I have to say I miss sweet tea (NC Style).  As to whether it's you or them...the real answer is probably...BOTH.

Welcome!!

It is probabaly both  or  just  situational..

I just came back from  visiting the states  yesterday and  it's like starting all over again  with the homesickness..
Now I have  tons of luggage  to unpack  and not much else..

I am very lucky that I have  met friends on this site though..   it is truly a blessing..

Happy New Year! ;)

Thanks for all of your replies. You are more likely correct when you say both. I work between Manchester & London and people I have met have been great! I have been told it is more a central village thing - this by fellow british! If you did not grow up in the village then you will always be considered an outsider - this is mainly within the middle section of the UK. We live outside of a small village between Worcester & Cheltenham- so it may just be location as well.

I must say when I am travelling to London on a beautiful sunny -warm..ish day & walk across the bridge I think I must be crazy - it is an exciting city with so many different cultures.   ::)
