Filing US taxes - only in UK since October 2019
« on: April 14, 2020, 01:26:04 PM »
Hi all

I moved to Manchester UK from Texas to live with my husband in October 2019.  Before I moved here I worked for Chick-fil-A and Walmart up until October, and from early November until now I've been working for TKMaxx here in Manchester.  I think that UK tax is not an issue as it will be taken via PAYE and as I'll be nowhere near the £12000approx threshold as I also took some unpaid time off to travel in the new year, I think I'll actually be due a rebate on the tax paid so far that should be generated automatically and will probably arrive via a cheque in May?  If I've got that wrong, do let me know!

The US tax situation seems more complicated, and I'd appreciate some advice about what I need to do to file my taxes correctly, with minimum difficulty, and without paying excess or duplicate tax.  Can I file online, and what form do I need to use, and what information do I need to include?  I'm not sure if my US bank account still exists or has been closed automatically.  I have no income in the form of dividends and no money in property.  I feel like my situation should be fairly straightforward but I can't find any straightforward information online about what I need to do!

Any help greatly appreciated, and feel free to ask any further questions about my situation :)

Hi,

I have a pretty good understanding of how his works but I can offer my opinion, not professional advice. If interested you can PM me and I can try to help.

I moved to the UK to be with my same sex partner, from Dallas (hey fellow Texan)!

Mike

In order to use the tax treaty on the income earned in the UK you need to pass the residency test, so you may need to file for an extension until you've reached the 330 days needed for the physical presence test. Next year you'll likely qualify with the "bonafide residence test".

For my tax situation the foreign earned income exclusion is much easier to use.

I'm not sure about the software. I'd used taxact for forever but apparently now you need a US address to pay for it.
