Mine was mailed out on the 1st of May, and I've just received it today in the post. Unfortunately, my bank in the US is a small local bank and they don't have a mobile app. Still not entirely sure how I will handle this. HSBC, who I bank with, will accept foreign cheques, but it seems like a complicated mess considering I'll take a ~250 hit due to the current currency exchange rates, plus the bank fee. The money will go further in the US, but I have no plans to visit there within the next year. Will need to have a long think about it.

You can always mail it to your US bank.  I used to do this before moblie check deposit became a "thing".

Does your bank have a way to deposit a check via scanning it via the web? Or could you mail it to them? Or is there anyone you trust that you could mail it to who would deposit it for you?

I have thought about mailing it, but am a little hesitant. It's almost too much of a risk to send that much money to trust it to the US post office or even a courier. I've got a video call with my mom this afternoon and I'm gonna ask if she will give the bank a call to see what options I have. Even the bank website is very simplistic, but scanning it may be a good idea, if they will support it.

Well, just out of curiosity I checked the website to see if they mailed me a cheque.  They said it was mailed to me May 15 to my U.K address.   Now what do I do.  I turned in my Green Card Jan. 8 and received an email March 15 from USCIS that they received my Abandonment of US status......now what  ???

i have a question - i haven't lived in the US since 2010 and still file yearly tax returns, but i never owe or receive anything. i received a stimulus check today - which as i understand is basically a tax credit against your 2020 taxes. surely they will be asking for this money back next year? i was thinking about cashing it and just keeping it in savings until they ask for it back. what are other people doing?  ???

This idea that it is an advance tax credit toward this year's taxes seems a bit rude.  What if I don't want the hassle of looking after this money for the next 12 months?  I also don't want to be hit with a surprise tax bill next year.  If this really is something that will have to be paid back, I'd just rather not, please.

Edit below:

According to the IRS website,

Quote
Q30. Is the Payment includible in my gross income? (updated April 24, 2020)

A30. No, the Payment is not includible in your gross income.  Therefore, you will not include the Payment in your taxable income on your Federal income tax return or pay income tax on your Payment. It will not reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2020 Federal income tax return.

A Payment also will not affect your income for purposes of determining eligibility for federal government assistance or benefit programs.

thanks @jfkimberly - i just had a hard time believing that since i don't pay taxes in the U.S. (even though i always file them), that they would still freely give me the stimulus money and expect nothing back.

Are people receiving cheques which the IRS website says where posted on 24/4?

I was finally able to log into the website today and its says mine was posted two weeks ago. I haven't received it yet, and I'm concerned that the way I entered my address on my 1040 might cause Royal Mail problems. My flat number and post code were correct though and hopefully that is good enough for the Royal Mail to find me.

When I go on the my payment site, it says my check was scheduled to be mailed out on the 1st of May. It usually takes about a week for me to get mail from the US. A bit worried about not having received it yet as well. Also, does everyone get a message saying what date it's scheduled to be mailed out or does it say what date it was mailed out and any other additional information. Thanks.

Oh wow. I hope I get mine soon then. I filed 2019 taxes about a month ago. IRS site is still not showing anything for me.

I'd think you would. I haven't had a need to do my taxes in the past 2 years, so I'm honestly surprised I even got a check

Chase.  They have a telephone app that takes pictures of the check and does it all automagically.
