Stimulus check - taxable in the UK?
« on: April 15, 2020, 10:45:07 PM »
I am hoping to receive my stimulus check soon after having filed for US taxes in 2018 and 2019 (I hope!).  Would the UK consider this to be taxable income?  The US does not, but I wonder how this would be viewed in the UK?  I will be calling HMRC at some point (the wait is probably crazy at them moment, so I will hold off), but I have found the call centre advice to not always be reliable/consistent about foreign income.  I am a full-time resident of the UK now.

Good question and I don’t know the answer. Sorry.

I don’t qualify myself, but my son does.

I have wondered the same thing, but my gut reaction is, that it won't be taxable.

I am basing that OPINION on the stimulus technically being an advance "tax refund" for 2020, despite the fact that you don't pay it back nor does it in any way ultimately affect your 2020 refund (if any) or result in a tax liability.
Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!
