Captain Wench Speaking (arr!)
« on: June 09, 2003, 06:23:54 PM »
Here's my recommendations.  :D

Cordelia's Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold.  It's a great introduction to the Vordosigan saga.  I think those of us who've made the move already will *really* identify with some of the stuff she goes through.

The Serpent's Shadow by Mercedes Lackey.  Another fab writer.  :)  And this one is set in London.  What more do you want?

Dragonsong by Anne McCaffrey.  A classic by one of the Grand Dames of Sci-fi/Fantasy.

Enchantment by Orson Scott Card  Haven't read it, looks interesting.

Local Custom by Steve Miller and Sharon Lee  Again, haven't read it, looks interesting.

And I shall put them in a poll for you guys.  :)

A few are classics to me by great authors.  A few look good.  Pick what ya want.  I don't go to the library around here (for various reasons) so I went on Amazon.co.uk and all should be available within about 24 hours.  So vote!  :D

Please, not Mercedes Lackey! I've read one of her books and was so disgusted by her writing that I'll never read her again.

She's awful!  [smiley=book.gif]

Ahem... in my opinion.

I don't know any of them, or what they're about, but I picked the one with dragons in the title cuz dragons are cooool. 8)

And you said it's a "classic" so I figure lots of people have enjoyed it, so why not give it a go?

I do not know any of the titles or authors...but I like the names of Dragonsong and/or enchantment...  I will be happy with either one...

I haven't heard of any of them either.  I just like the sound of Dragon's song and enchantment.  But I shall choose one out of the two....

almost forgot.....Ah har har cap'ain shall we sink her or shall we rip her of her bounty and put her crew up for ransom?  Ah har har har...

The Black Swan. I thought the story was good, she just didn't develop the characters well enough and her writing was seriously lacking. Probably why she's called Lackey  [smiley=devilish.gif]

Lol Ashley.  ;D  Not her best book.  I'll have to force you to read some of the good ones at some point.  [smiley=devilish.gif]

Right now the most votes are for a mutiny.  Does this mean you guys would rather someone else chose?  ;)

I did warn you it would be Sci-fi and Fantasy!  :D

No way Wench... leave the books as you choose, that is part of having a book club...how will we learn to become diversified if we do not try new things...  I have never read Sci-fi fantasy...but I am willing to give it a go for the enjoyment of learning and reading something new...

forget the mutiny's...  if they do not wish to read a book this time around...then that is their choice.  Reading is life's greatest Teacher...  so lets Read!

:D  Thanks Shel.  Well I'm thinking that unless the votes change before Friday, Enchantment is the way to go.  :)

How long would you like to have reading wise?  I can probably finish it in a day or so (barring distractions...oooh, shiny things!), but obviously everyone reads at different paces...Not to mention that some of us are reading other books too!  ;D

Arrr!

Yeah, Wench, I've never read this stuff either, really (I have read a few books my hubby has given me) but I'll read pretty much anything, and I think it will be fun to read it with someone who obviously knows and loves the genre.

(Besides, keep in mind...if we refuse to read her stuff, who's to say anyone will read our stuff when it's our turn! ;D ;D ;D)

Just kidding.  I'm not for mutiny, let's read the sci-fi thing.

As far as timing goes...errrr!  a day definitely will not do me...  I am up at 330 am to come to work...at work until 3pm...  drive an hour home...by the time I do a workout, walk etc...prepare for next day at work...I do not see my reading until I go to bed between 730 -8pm...  so only about 30 - 60 minutes of reading a day for me...  Weekends I can add more.

Also depends on the size of book...plus we have to find the book...  or order it, that takes some time...  I think a month for reading with meetings in between the time to discuss it?  Never belonged to a book club, so not sure of the normal agendas??

Ahem, off the... err... current subject, I'd like to throw out a few more ideas.

Now, before I do this, may I explain that I'm such a freak when it comes to planning out stuff. I really like things to be set out and structured... blah blah blah and I feel responsible for the board since I made a big fuss about getting it.  ;D

Having said that....I was thinking we can keep the poll up a week to allow everyone a chance to vote. When the week is up, the Captain (in this case, Wenchy) will announce the book and the date/time of the chat.

So... let me know.
