US Drivers License Renewal
« on: January 05, 2005, 05:40:52 PM »
So i have a Mass driving liscence as I moved here from there.  It expires in July of this year.

We will be returning to the states in 2007, not sure if it will be before or after July.....(so my 2 year grace period on letting the liscence lapse may pass).

What should i do?  I can't renew my boston liscence as no one lives at our old address and it would be sent there. I guess i could use my best friend's address but i wouldn't want them to get in trouble or anything.

I could get a CT one where my parents live and use their address?  I'm assuming i can just transfer my license from one state to another?  Maybe i can get my new last name on there?

Just curious.  I've been looking at the DMV sites but we know how helpful they can be.   :o

ok i found this.....

sorry guys!

my NJ license expires in October, but I plan on being in the States before that time to renew it.  I don't want be in a position where I don't have a license here or there.

I dont think either you or your friends could get in trouble for using their address to renew your DL. Its probably a lot easier than trying to get a new license in another state. I used my grandparents address in NY to renew my permit last year.

I hope it doesn't get them in trouble as I'm planning to use my best friend's address in RI when I renew mine!

I got stuck in a catch-22 situation when mine expired. I couldn't do mine online in Texas.....they have the capability, but unfortunately the credit card I would be using didn't have the same address as where it was going (all my credit cards were UK or US ones with the new UK address). It had to be mailed to a Texas address.

So best to read the fine print on the renewal sites! lol

an update

had to change my address to my friend's address.  took 3 days online.

then submitted for renewal, paid with a credit card still associated to my maiden name (which my liscence is in) and bang.

i did this on the 17th-it got to them this weekend!  it's on it's way.

super easy!!!

I wish NJ followed that.  Luckily when I was back in NJ in May, I was able to renew it, even though my current one still had 6 months to go until exipiration.

For those with a NJ license, I just got an email back from the NJDMV about this very issue. As I'm in the UK my license will expire in May of 2007, not wanting to lose it how do you renew if you live here? According to the DMV without a NJ address your sunk! So they advised using a family address in NJ and change my license address online months before renewal, and come back to  NJ and go to the DMV for renewal, there is no online license renewal in NJ. Another point, there is now a 6 point system for proviing to the Home Land Security Agency and the DMV that your allowed a license, you have to show them a passport, US of course, and a few things including somthing with your NJ address on it! If you meet the six point test at the window of the DMV they'll renew your license, take your picture and your good for another 5 years! They also noted that you can renew 6 months before your current license expires, what a system!!!!!!

nmills1757- thanks for the info.  i renewed my NJ licence in June.  It had only 3 months left.  I renewed when I went back to NJ as this can ONLY be done in person.  I had to show the following to get to 6 points (there are other combos that will get you to 6 points)- Passport, Birth Certificate, Credit Card Statement with NJ address, Pay Stub, Old NJ licence, renewal form.  Got my picture taken- and viola a nifty new hologram NJ licence.
