Tax filing status & stimulus check
« on: May 14, 2020, 02:51:46 PM »
Hiya,

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere....

For those of you Americans married to Brits who have received the stimulus, how have you filed your returns?

I file “married filing separately” and then put NRA (nonresident alien) for my British spouse’s “tax ID number”. Does this mean I won’t qualify for the stimulus? There is an article in the Washington Post today about an American woman actually living in the US who didn’t get a payment because she is married to a non-American (and he lives in the US and has an ITN number).

Have any of you received the payment with the NRA status on your return for your spouse?

Thanks!

I filed the same way and got my stimulus. I have read that if you live in the US and file a joint return and are married to a noncitizen, you then don't get a stimulus cheque.

I think I read that as non-citizen spouses on temporary visas wouldn't get it, but are they not getting the individual amount?

I file MFS w/ NRA for my husband and got the individual $1200.

From what I read, you don't even get the individual amount if you live in the US, are married to a noncitizen and file a joint return.

Indeed! Apparently people are suing to get their checks though.

Thanks you guys! I’ll have to wait and see. This whole process seems a bit nuts. My former colleague sent me this article about a British woman who received a stimulus check from America:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2020/05/01/irs-sent-1200-rich-woman-who-doesnt-need-it-also-shes-british-lives-london/?utm_campaign=wp_main&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook

The other thing that really irritates me is having to mail in my return instead of efiling. I mean, why can’t the IRS allow efiling for NRA spouse status? I was not happy having to go to the post office during this pandemic. Grrr.
