Help!! Its my first time...
« on: July 13, 2020, 03:22:11 PM »
So my wife and I are filing for the first time with no income in the USA.

Please..... were to start? We have always had accountants in the handle this in the past.

1-Are our taxes due tomorrow or is there an extension since we are in the UK?

2-If not do we need to file an extension?

3-Please just give us the basics of how it works from this side of the pond.... we know nothing.

Thanks.

For the 2019 tax year you can file for an extension to October 15th to give you more time to file.

Thanks so much, I just managed to get my Federal extension filed.  This might be a silly question... background.... We have NO US income at all. We do have our mail delivered to my inlaws in New York state and we still maintain bank accounts in the US.

Do we need to file a STATE extension and or State taxes?

Don’t know about State I’m afraid, my ‘home’ State is Texas which has no income tax.

You have no US income, do you have any income because the US taxes USCs on worldwide income  regardless of where they live.  Maybe someone more knowledgeable will come along and say that if you have no income anywhere that you don’t have to file at all. I really don’t know.

Thanks,

I realize we always have to file federal. But if we have no income in the USA why would we have to file a state return? What state would we file in?? Maybe Im wrong this is my first time after all.... we last filed in New York. Anyone?

AFAIK the State you were last resident in is the State you may or may not have to file in, and rules vary from State to State.  For example, I left the State of Louisiana over 10 years ago to live in Texas and have never been back, but I do receive a non-qualified pension from my old employer reported on a W-2 so I am taxed on that Louisiana  income.

If you are not a resident of any state and have no sourced income from any state, then you do not have to file any state income tax returns.
