Thanks eveyrone. I am probably going to get a B revi Pony or a Cossato they both fold up small and look sturdy and easy to clean etc. I emailed my friend (actually she is more of an acquaintance) and said in a nice way I'd decided to buy a new chair and she sent me a very sulky reply saying I wouldn't be able to get a decent sturdy chair cheaper than the cost of getting her chair recovered.  Some people have to take everything personally!

In the USA I had one of the 3 in 1 reclining ones. They were great because you can use the reclining position before baby can sit up on his own. I considered getting one here but they are just way too bulky. Jack still feeds in his bouncy seat but hopefully he will be sitting up any day now and can sit in his highchair.

Just something to think about but if your baby isn't sitting up unassisted, he's not ready for solids.  Not even that nasty rice cereal.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Where did you hear that Kristi? Everything I've read says you can start solids any time after 17 weeks of age if they seem ready for it, ie, hungry all the time, looking interested in what everyone's eating, putting things in their mouth.  Pebbles, you're a mum of 4,  when have all of yours started on solids?

Definitely not true.  My daughter is a VERY late bloomer in the gross motor skills department, as I was.  She was not sitting on her own unassisted until she was 8 months, but she was ready for solids right around 6 months.  When they're eyeing your food, watching you eat, and/or trying to grab the food or eating utensils out of your hands, it's time to experiment with solids.

We first experimented with pureed bananas (in a jar) and went from there.  She didn't like the cereal at all, so we went straight onto fruits.

Cossato's are WAY hip!  All their stuff is wicked cool.

Niall couldn't sit unaided until he was almost six months, but was taking solids at 4.
Insert wonderfully creative signature here …

I hope Kristi comes back and tells us where she heard that. I know it is the WHO recommendation to breastfeed to 6 months now but if your baby;'s om formula maybe they are ready for solids sooner?

Just a note. My Jack is 7 months and doesnt sit unassisted yet and he has been on solids nearly since birth. He was almost 11lbs at birth and had to start on rice about 6 weeks as he was starving all the time.

Thank you everyone.  I am sure Ethan is ready for solids, he is just hungry all the time and wakes up at night hungry.  I think I'll give my HV a call tomorrow and see what she says but I really think he's ready.

i think the most important thing is to follow the baby's clues.  if ethan is doing his hungry routine all the time and stuffing his hands in his mouth a lot, etc, it can't hurt to try him on solids and see how he does.  it's different for every baby, i'm sure, in so many things.  some babies are just hungrier than others.

one thing we noted is to try things on her more than once.  s/times, for example, she wouldn't initially like a food.  but she would a week later or so.  she still does that now.  she'll go off s/thing, and then happily take it after a break.

yep, that's a pretty good sign.  and the hungry cry.  just remember when he was tiny and just 50ml was all his little tummy could take?!  quick check w/the HV, but my guess is gonna be she'll say to give it a go.  the texture was the biggest shock for Aillidh.  that and the spoon.  but oh, the sleep you two will get the night he takes a little food  :).  BLISS!

Soon as baby gets you used to sleeping through the night it all blows up again when teething begins. Yaaawwn....
Jack went to bed at 6 tonight and usually would sleep till 6 or 7am but he's teething so he got up about 45 min ago. He's sitting here with me sucking his fist and waiting for the Calpol to kick in.
