I'm so relieved.  I know it's still a long road, but he's headed in the right direction.  Thank you for keeping us updated.  I know you've got a lot of worry, so I appreciate you taking the time to let us know how your family is doing.

Jeffrey continues to improve. We just got off the phone with the ICU and the news is that yesterday they began reducing the drugs keeping him in the medical coma, his blood oxygen was maintaining at 95%, he is now off BP drugs as he no longer needs them. Antibiotics continue for the side infection in his lung.

Today he is on 30% oxygen from the ventilator and they will be taking a chest x-ray later today. They expect to take him off the ventilator tomorrow.

Such good news.

That really is fantastic news.

We called this morning at 09:15 and the nurse said that he had had a restful night, his stats looked good and they would probably try to bring him off the ventilator later today, so best to call back in a few hours.

We did various things to keep busy and at 14:30 were installing an automatic window opener on the new greenhouse when he called me. (I have a specific ringtone for him).

He is now off the ventilator and back on the CPAP machine with the "space helmet" dome machine. It was absolutely wonderful hearing his voice and talking with him.  We'll call the ICU later today for more details but it certainly looks like he is on the road to recovery.

That is absolutely fantastic news!  I am so pleased to hear how much he's improving, and that he was able to get restful sleep so he just feels better.  I'm so pleased.  Obviously, focus on your family, but please continue to keep us updated when you have time.

Keep up the good fight, Jeffrey!!!  You are kicking covid’s ass!

We were both working in the greenhouse when the phone in my zipped pocket started playing the Imperial Death March from Star Wars. Had to scramble to put down tools and retrieve my phone.

Absolutely amazing to get to talk to him. We were hoping that they were going to be successful bringing off the ventilator today but never expected to talk to him.

Don't have a photo of his CPAP space helmet but I imagine it looks a bit like this.

Just spoke with the ICU nurse looking after him and while he is making great progress he is not out of the woods yet and if the CPAP machine doesn't do it they will have to put him back on the ventilator.  He hates the CPAP, saying it is like being in a wind tunnel and the nurse said that she has agreed that it will be 1 hour on, 1 hour off, but overnight he has to be on CPAP because breathing is naturally light while sleeping and he needs to keep up a good flow of air into his lungs. When not on CPAP he has an oxygen feed through the nose.

I'm really happy to read this Durhamlad!  Reading the experiences of you and Aquila has been interesting because if you don't actually know somebody who's impacted it's easy to forget what a huge deal this is.
I've got a friend who's on the surface the biggest hippie you'd ever want to meet and forever going on about mindfulness and asking the Universe for this or that.  The first day it was legal we got together for an Easter egg hunt and she started bragging about never wearing a mask on public transport or at work or shopping because she has a lanyard.   No reason for the lanyard, the train company gave it to her and that means she doesn't have to wear a mask simply because she "prioritizes her mental health".
I was shocked and just had to change the subject because you can't ask someone to your house and then argue with them.

You and Mrs Durhamlad let me know if I need to call him and be “an American mother” to him.  In the nicest way possible, I will gently tell him to “deal with the wind tunnel”. ;D

Genuinely though, would foam earplugs help, if he’s able to have them?  I can imagine the sensory disturbance of that noise is immense!

Jimbo, WOW!  Just WOW!

Jimbo- I couldn’t be friends with that person anymore. I don’t care the shared history. I don’t have time for morons anymore (it’s why I stopped teaching!).

Durhamlad - you’ve made me weep like my infant son reading your updates! I’m so so pleased for your family right now. Small wins.
