They are giving out boxes of 6 of  those lateral flow tests to the students at my boy's school.   The novelty has worn off and now it's a PITA to get him to take one every week.

Thankfully primary school it's just parents.  I have no issue doing it.  Novelty still fun!

Finally booked in for my first vaccine dose next Monday... on my birthday!

It’ll be Oxford vaccine as that’s all we have here... but I only have to wait 4 weeks between doses :)

The oxford is a traditional vaccine, so I think it is more effective when 12 weeks between doses?

Sort of, but it is a genetically modified virus, which is quite different from traditional vaccines that use weakened or dead viruses to stimulate the body's immune defences.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford%E2%80%93AstraZeneca_COVID-19_vaccine

Quote
The Oxford–AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine is a replication-deficient simian adenovirus vector, containing the full‐length codon‐optimised coding sequence of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein along with a tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) leader sequence.

The adenovirus is called replication-deficient because some of its essential genes were deleted and replaced by a gene coding for the spike protein. Following vaccination, the adenovirus vector enters the cells and releases its genes, which are transported to the cell nucleus; thereafter the cell's machinery does the transcription into mRNA and the translation into proteins.[

Here is a recent peer reviewed study from Public Health England that has lots of good news in it.

Table 1 is particularly interesting and easy to read.

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/990089/Vaccine_surveillance_report_-_week_20.pdf

Quote
Compared to unvaccinated, vaccine effectiveness for 1 dose was estimated at 54% (95% CI 50-58%) for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and 53% (95%CI 49-57%) for the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. Compared to 4 to 13 days post vaccination, this was 57% (95%CI 53-61%) and 58% (95%CI 54-62%) respectively.

After 2 doses, effectiveness was estimated as 90% (95%CI 82-95%) for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and 89% (95%CI 78-94%) for the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine compared to unvaccinated. Compared to 4 to13 days post vaccination,this was 91% (95%CI 83-95%) and 90% (95%CI 80-95%) respectively.

With the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine there is a small reduction in vaccine effectiveness from 10 weeks after the first dose. This may be explained by some waning of protection or by biases due to differences in the earliest groups who were vaccinated compared to later groups. There is no evidence of this waning effect with the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine.

Right?  :D

I honestly can't believe the amount of absolute antivax nonsense that's still being spouted online though.  Makes me sad...

Amazing amount of crap that some people actually buy into.

Did you read about the vaccine hypocrites who are secretly getting vaccinated while still spouting the anti vaccine nonsense?

Vaccines have become so politicised that the US is now having to provide safe spaces for people worried that they will be ostracised by their peers for believing in science.

I feel like I know SOOOO many people (globally) who have had it in the last 6 weeks or so.... anyone seeing the same thing?

All "mild to moderate".  One was someone who had it but still got their vaccine, which made them very ill (not hospital ill but very ill at home).  And still weren't great and had their second vaccine yesterday (they are in Spain).

Same here. In fact we had some landscaping done on our front lawn this past few weeks and a couple of days before the job was finished 2 of them went down with Covid leaving the owner of the company to finish up. The young apprentice, age 18, had his first vaccine dose then called in sick next day but it wasn’t a reaction to the vaccine, he actually had Covid so was very unlucky. The other lad, in is 20s,  had had one jab a couple of weeks earlier.  Both recovered at home.
