I don't know what the procedure is with BRPs now...

I came in on a fiancee visa, so didn't have one at first.  After we married, I got my first FLR(M), and had a BRP with that.  I submitted that BRP to UKVI when I applied for my second FLR(M).  I got a new BRP with my second FLR(M) approval, and I submitted that one when I applied for ILR.  After ILR was approved, I got my third, and final, BRP.  I held on to that one until after my citizenship ceremony, then my husband and I ceremoniously cut it into several pieces, I wrote a note explaining I no longer require it, and I sent the pieces to the address in the letter.  It was scary and satisfying at the same time.  :)

I never had more than one BRP at a time, and there were times when I was 'between visas' when I didn't have a BRP at all.  But, as I said before... I completed everything two years ago.  There have been so many changes since I did it.  :/  I wish I knew more about how it's going now.
9/1/2013 - "fiancée" (marriage) visa issued
4/6/2013 - married (certificate issued same-day)
5/6/2013 - FLR(M)#1 in person -- approved!
8/1/2016 - FLR(M)#2 by post -- approved!
8/5/2018 - ILR in person -- approved!
22/11/2018 - Citizenship (online, with NDRS+JCAP) -- approved!
14/12/2018 - I became a British citizen.  :)

We cut ours up and returned it by registered post. I think if you take whatever old ones and send them back now after cutting them up that is still valid and a smart thing to do to avoid any possible penalisation. You could write a short cover note to just state you are returning these expired BRPs or so?

I did the cutting up part and put it in an envelope, but I haven't mailed it back yet. I'll do that today (but not by registered post, because I want to stay out of the post office--too crowded).

Did you apply for your British passport when you were filling out your naturalization application, Biscuits? Or has that option been removed?

When we filled out our online naturalization application there was no option to apply for a passport at the same time!  We returned the expired BRP cut into four as per the instructions in the email we received by ordinary 1st class mail.

I believe the service that allowed you to apply for your U.K. passport at the same time as citizenship (JCAP) was closed a couple of years ago.

The JCAP service was introduced in 2016 and was later closed in 2018.

Therefore, you now have to apply for citizenship first and then you can apply for a U.K. passport after your citizenship has been approved and you have attended your ceremony.

I just put my cut up card in the post too. Thanks for confirming.

Bummed out about this, but that would explain why I can't find anything current about it (aside from information on local government sites). As usual, my timing SUCKS. It would have been so nice to be finished with everything at one go.

It was very convenient but it was just being phased out when my husband applied, around the same time as JFKimberly.
I always feel a little bummed about missing the 2012 changes by about 6 months. But at the time, him coming here wasn't even on the horizon!
At least you are *almost* there!  :)

Unfortunately there was no option to do this for us as others have suggested or we would have jumped on it in a second! At least this feels more like a downhill stretch now :)

When I got ILR in May of 2018, I was planning to apply for citizenship "at some stage in the near-ish future", but I wasn't really in a rush (I was just basking in the phrase "free from immigration control").  That is, until I learned in mid-October than they were getting rid of JCAP and NDRS, and I wanted to use those services.  So I hounded my husband to sort out my professional referree (the pub owner), and I got my personal referee to fill hers out, and submitted my application in by the end of the month.  Then I went to what might have been the last appointment my local authority did to submit all of my documents and my passport application materials.  Miraculously, after applying at the end of October/early November, I had my approval by the middle of November, and I had my ceremony (private one in my in-law's city so my husband's grandparents could attend) in mid-December.  I got my passport on Christmas Eve.  <3

That's the thing, the rules change so frequently (and rarely for the better) that it really is best just to keep on going until you are all the way done with the process.  :)

That's what we decided to do, as soon as we had the ILR BRP in hand we did the application and we have uploaded all the documents requested (can't believe how few are needed for Naturalisation! kept rechecking the list in case we missed something) and we are attending the biometrics appointment next week. Then we wait...

Well that was a bit tedious but pretty easy overall. It turns out I need to get more passport photos taken because the ones I recently had for my the US passport renewal are not the correct size for this application. Figures, doesn't it?

Fortunately, one of my former colleagues and friends JUST became a member of a professional association for architects and he has agreed to be my professional referee. As soon as I get my new photos, I'll send the form off in the mail for him to complete and send back. I am going to have to use the post for both of my referees since they both live too far away (plus, COVID)...

Stupid question, but when did you upload your documents? I have already completed the application and paid, but I have not been asked to upload any of my completed documents. It has taken me right to the biometric appointment step. I am NOT finding a lot of appointments, but I'll check again later since I still need to get my referee documents anyway.

We already had everything scanned and saved from ILR so we were able to upload the documents the same day we completed the application, well everything except the two referees forms as we needed to mail one to the US and the other to a family friend here in Scotland. we now have them back and have uploaded them both and submitted the uploads as our appointment is on Wednesday 25th Nov.
